Second game of Champions League today at 20:30 CET

SP Tre Fiori (San Marino) vs. UE Sant Julià (Andorra)

I will be cheering for Tre Fiori...our Italian cousins! :)

- Sant Julia lost in the UEFA Cup First Qualifying Round 9-0 to Cherno More Varna (Bulgaria) last year.
- Tre Fiori did not play in European football last year.

No they won't. With so many stars I doubt they will even win anything this season.

Agreed, and I doubt too, but will be hard for everyteam who will be against Real Madrid in CL. so hope we didn't have that luck

Is that the Tirana that is playing right now in Europa League? I hope not because they allowed a goal 2 minutes into the game! :(

I noticed something really surprising when going over the Uefa coefficients. I knoew the Germans were closing in on the Italians, I didnt know they were gonna be this close.
Germany's coefficient for the next year's European places in only 3 points behind Italy. So as long as Italy matches Germany in European competitions this season and the season after that, everything will be fine?! WRONG.

Uefa coefficents are based on 5 years performance of the teams, and the chunk on Italian coefficients comes from 05-06 and 06-07. After those years Bundesliga has had more coefficients than Italy. In the coming years, 06 and 07 coefficients wont be counted, and so ITaly will drop below Germany. For the UCL in 2011, Germany already has a 2.5 point coefficient advantage over Italy.

So unless something dramatic happens, we will see only 3 Italian teams in CL starting from 2011, maybe even from 2010, depending on the performances this season. Coefficient points are not only given for how far you go in the tournament but also for the victories you can rack up.

Then again, if the leaders of a country win a massive 2 games out of 8, and lose to Panathanikos at home, then maybe that country doesnt deserve to have 4 teams in the CL.

Exactly. German teams have done well in UEFA Cup in recent years, at the same time Italians haven't been interested in that competition. Instead in CL Italian teams haven't managed to be much better than Germany teams to nullify the gap in UEFA Cup.

Mourinho has a true test in coming season. Inter need to rack up wins already in the group stage as 2nd pot team. Also qualifying to at least the quarter-finals is a must. Though again might be hard task to complete if we end up runner-up in group stage.

I'm wondering, if Inter is in the 2en pot then so Milan, Juve and Fiorentina. then which teams will be at the first pots?!

To Nim Araya...

Here is the seeding for next season's CL.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/seedcl2009.html

In the bottom of the page, there are group stage pots, with this assumption, also said in that page:

Below it is assumed that the seeded teams of the 4th qualifying round qualify for the group stage. If unseeded teams qualify other teams may shift to a higher pot.

So the most probable scenario is that Inter will be in the 2nd pot, because Arsenal and Lyon BOTH most probably won't fail in the qualification round.

And why do Inter have such low points?

Well, UEFA coefficiency points are gathered every season. The coefficieny points are a cumulative total of the past 5 season's points in UEFA competitions. That's why Sevilla for example is in the 1st pot because they've gathered such huge amount of points in UEFA Cup.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/data/method4/trank2010.html

This is why Inter should also play well in the group stage. On the other hand, now it gives an opportunity to have two big games already in the group stage when startin in pot 2, but on the other hand it gives bigger possibility Inter to finish the group as runner-up and not as winner. Which again means bigger possibility to face a top club already in the 1/16 stage and to get eliminated there. And like I listed in other thread, every round in the cup stage gives you more money + attendace revenues in the home match. So there is also a financial aspect in getting to the next round in CL.

So Milan is in the 1st pot, Juventus in the 3rd (or 2nd) and Fiorentina, if they qualify to the group stage, will be in the 4th pot.

This is really stupid. Italian Champion should be at 2en pot but 3rd team Milan that was in Uefa cup last season and even failed there should be at first spot?!! What about Lyon? Did they go further than us last season at CL?! Barca ravaged them!!! What about Real?! They are being eliminated at 1/8 year after year and they're not even champions. Liverpool humiliated them last season. And Sevilla?!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Did you read my post? Those points are gathered by actually winning matches in Euro competitions. Position in the domestic championship grants you a place in Euro competition (CL or Uefa Cup=Europa League), nothing else. Then it's up to you how well you do in Euro competitions and the result determines your status (coefficiency points) there. Real Madrid and Inter are totally earned their place in the 2nd pot instead of 1st by screwing up in the CL constantly in the past five seasons.

Yea and I think Shahz mentioned it in the other posts too that if Italians do not do well in 2010 and 2011 CL, the fourth Italian team will be gone.

It is going to be a hugely blow should that happen
