Charlie say..

So I know this old Interista named Charlie, even older than I4E. He was at the Meazza in 1965 when we defeated Benfica in the Champions Cup, he played against Capello's Juventus side with his amateur Malta team in a pre-season friendly in the 70's.

He owns a burger shop in a shopping mall not far from where I live and I go there usually once every week or fortnight, partly for their Portuguese chicken burgers, partly to talk to Charlie. I got to know Charlie when I went there once as a high school kid several years back while wearing an Inter jersey. He made an offhand comment about 'wearing a good shirt' and asked me a question about how the team was doing. Thinking I was just one of those 'international' video game type fans, of which there are many, he was surprised at my knowledge of the club and it's history, and was delighted to hear that I knew about his favorite player Facchetti.

Anyway, over the years I've spoken to Charlie a lot about club affairs and it's always been interesting to hear what he has to say and learn from a lifelong Interista who has so much experience. I still live and work in this district and so I see Charlie every now and again. Typically, we rattle on about Inter for a good 10 minutes, then Charlie serves me an average-to-decent chicken burger. I decided it might be interesting to open this thread and share with you disinterested faggots and sweaty inbreds some of the uncannily accurate predictions and hilarious razor sharp comments Charlie has had to say to me over the years.

So here are some I can remember now (in no particular order). I'll update this thread when I can.

Regarding Adriano 2005-ish:

He could be the greatest ever, but no one will remember him in 5 years.



Regarding Cassano in 06 or so:

He'll come to Inter when he's 30.



Regarding Recoba:

Your favorite player is a waste of money.



Regarding Mourinho in 2009:

If he doesn't win the champions league this year, he's leaving.

Me: what if he wins?

Charlie: he'll still leave.



After the champions league win in 2010:

Last time was better.



Regarding Benitez in 2011:

The Spaniard? He hates the Portuguese (referring to Mourinho). Jealous. The players won't respect that.



Regarding Mancini in 08:

If he doesn't win the 2nd leg against Liverpool, he's gone at the end of the season. I'll bet my house on it.



Regarding Santon in 2010:

I thought he was fucking Argentinian?



After the defeat to Juventus in 2012 under Ranieri:

I would line them up against the wall and shoot them all.



Last month:

Do you know why we're in this position now? Because we didn't get Capello a few years ago.



Regarding Thohir:

This Malaysian better spend some money.

Me: he's Indonesian, also he paid off our debt or something.

Charlie: whatever. More money.



Today:

I heard Man City bought Melbourne Heart or some shit? What a waste of money.

Me: Kinda like how our owner is part owner of DC United.

Charlie: no one gives a fuck about MLS.

Me: I think Fassone is a rat.

Charlie: Mafioso.

For sure mate, to be serious for a moment I'm really glad I met Charlie. I learn a lot of shit, something new and interesting every time I talk to the dude. Stuff you can't find on the internet you know? Stuff about shady dealings involving the way Boninsegna left us for Juventus, and how our deal for Chinaglia fell through and he moved to Cosmos in the US instead etc. Stuff I'd never even heard of.

Haven't spoken to Charlie bout Vieri but he's used to it. He's seen plenty of players make the divide over to Milan and juve. I did see him the day after our 3-1 victory over Barca in 2010, the match where Balotelli threw his jersey on the ground, regarding that incident him saying Balotelli had no respect. Regarding Balotelli in general, Charlie's always maintained that he's overrated.

That does remind me though, when he said Balotelli was overrated I responded by saying the Italian 'youth' was hardly spectacular (keep in mind this was now 4 years ago, so the youth would have been the likes of Balotelli, Santon, Giovinco, Poli, Bonucci etc,) and he said that the talent is always there. It's the coaches who have declined in quality and the system which doesn't support youth enough.

Yep, as Kevin said, he meant after Mou, not before. He rates Capello highly. Thinks he's the only coach in the world who could have been strict with both the players and management while getting good results. Shame we'll probably never know.

Yeah I have a "Charlie" too...he is my dad who is also an Interista,my grandpa was as well but he died before I was even born unfortunatly(He witnessed the Grande era)so it is a shame we could not talk about it.My dad also wittnesed the Grande Era but he was just a 10 year old kid when Inter first won the UCL so he doesn't remember much details.

My dad's reaction about current events at Inter: He said that this Inter is one of the more badly managed Inter's he has ever seen from Walt which he doesn't like at all,he says that such football was played em...he didn't even seen anything like it at Inter in 40 year or so...well maybe under Tardelli and Lippi(he hates those two)and Suarez who was a shit coach.
