Great news from Christian. We all hope he will be able to make it to the Danish World Cup squad, which from my side would be one of very few positive things about the tournament in Qatar.

Speaking during an interview on Danish TV Channel Sport Tv2, the Danish footballer opened up about the cardiac arrest that he suffered during Euro 2020 that almost took his life.

That event meant that he is no longer eligible to play in Italy due to the medical device he has fitted to regulate his heartbeat. His contract with the club was recently terminated by mutual consent so he can make a return to playing football elsewhere.

Christian Eriksen explained that it was a shame that he can no longer play for Inter but he has to make the best decisions with his family in mind and his wife supports the choice to leave Inter.

“In the ambulance I thought: keep my shoes. It’s over. I don’t play football anymore. The same thing I said to my girlfriend, Sabrina: I don’t play anymore, I don’t believe it. I would like to go back to my normal everyday life.

“After all, I am a soccer player. I want to be, and I hope to be again soon. Inter? It’s a shame because I loved my time spent in that team. I have to make the best decision with my family and I have Sabrina’s support in this.”

the latest rumours are that we have insurance that covers his unamortised book cost, and we get his wages off the books, so we're probably saving like 40-50mil. Realisticalaly, too, his transfer fee would basically be fuck all at the moment anyway

I assume he has to wear a defib, he is choosing to play, not forced. So yes, if he could wear a defib in Italy he would have stayed at Inter.

I was working on a case study on this 5-6 years ago, not sure how much better these things are now. I know that they are extremely important tools for cardiac incidents, but I'm not sure if it's life saving 100% of the time for people who stress their hearts all the time (ie professional athletes).

The reason why it's generally accepted is because having a second cardiac incident at a young age is considered extremely rare and in that case, they predict that the chances are that the defibrillator will do its job. But it was not guaranteed, so I assume that Italians are extremely cautious about this.

There was this kid in Greece*, had cardiac problems present themselves in 2020. Was a decent enough talent, would have been pro for sure at least in the Greek leagues whose his agent was seeking moves for better European leagues, he just retired due to heart issues. Just 20 years old. He already had a handful of appearances with the first team last season and was rather regular on the bench and he was participating with the the Greek NT at youth level. It's safe to assume that he'd have a more important role with the first team this season, but his heart problems deteriorated. Probably covid related, as he had it in the spring of 2020 and was out of action for almost four months iirc, a lot of that due to football being stopped and all that.

I'm not entirely sure if he has a defibrillator, it just happened three days ago and today they have a derby so I didn't look into it yet, not really good timing to ask these things. I suppose he had a e, but it was never reported, it's not as if he was famous or that these things become known at any level unless the person opens up.
His agent has offered him a job as a scout with his firm, so good on him for keeping him in the sport.

This is a person that had cardiac arrythmia as a kid, but it was never a concern until 1-2 years ago when the doctors spotted a more dangerous anomaly.

Just wanted to say that it's not easy to advise people to keep playing at a professional level if they have issues with their hears. Heck, doctors tell you to avoid going up the stairs when you can, training in football is like doing that for a couple of hours a day, not just getting on the 6th floor once a day!


No need to be critical of doctors applying caution. I feel the Italian rules are much better for the sport. That's the job of regulators. We've already had the terrible news of Davide Astori, imagine having something else on the pitch, especially a person that could have been advised to not participate in this engagement...

My post was more simplified to the point that Eriksen is closing to continue, personal choice and if that is the case I would have loved that to be in an Inter shirt. So I guess it is a sadness to not have him in our squad.

I also feel like he should retire, he has a family and lots of money and nothing to prove in the beautiful game. I'm currently trying to get my shirt (avatar) signed by him so I can frame it.

I just wanted to point out that there are sometimes some rules, laws, procedures etc that are there for a reason.

Rules are never placed in advance. They are added because there was a hole. I feel that Italy has remarkably filled this hole, whereas RoW hasn't caught on yet because they did not share the same experiences. If we ever see an unfortunate in a top league, especially the PL that gets more international coverage, you'll see that everyone will follow what Italy is doing. Do you disagree on this one?

I mean, Muamba collapsed in the premiership tbh as well. I think on this particular issue they've just taken a more risky view for whtaever reason. I do think Italy is doing the right thing, and while it sucks for Eriksen, I do think its not worth the risk

I believe people should have the freedom to make their own choices if they are in the right mental frame of mind to do so.

There has been cases in the premier league already, years and years ago, recently Charlie Wyke and John Fleck collapsed with cardiac problems.

You can't get any bigger coverage than Eriksen at the Euro's.

Ultimately it's up to the player. Let the player decide what's more important for them, not the regulator.

But as a viewer, I would be in a state of panic every time the player fell down, or looked out of breath, or touched his chest..
