We won but Italy was robbed that day. 2 clear goals called off, first Vieri then Inzaghi in 90th min i think.

Lukaku is a great all round player. However, I'd still pick Vieri in my team. He was mentally tougher than Lukaku and more reliable to show up against tough opponents and score out of nowhere. Also Vieri's heading is better and he's more lethal inside the penalty box. You can mark him all you want, but he will score if you blink an eye for a second. Just my thoughts as I've watched both at Inter.

I am sure this has been posted in the past, but I wanted to share this again to remind that we had the world's biggest stars in the team who where ready to sacrifice for Inter.

Ahead of the release of his autobiography on Friday, former Inter striker Christian Vieri has revealed some fascinating revelations from his career, including the deal that almost brought Alessandro Nesta to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

"Vieri spoke of convincing then teammates Alvaro Recoba and Ronaldo to take salary cuts, in the hope of freeing up funds to facilitate Nesta’s move".

“All was agreed,” the former Nerazzurri striker told Gazzetta dello Sport.

‘Bobo’ then recalled the moment that Angelo Moratti called while he was at a horse racing event to deliver the news that Nesta was too expensive and Carlos Gamarra was going to be signed instead.

“I said nothing. Without even hanging up, I launched the phone towards the horse track with all my strength.

“In retrospect, it was nothing against Gamarra, who was a good defender, but at the time Nesta was the greatest.

“And he was ready to come to us.”

Nesta later joined AC Milan for around €30 million, where he would remain until 2012.

P/S: Not sure why this man isn't in LGI.

I think the article mistakenly refers to Angelo Moratti. Obviously, it was President Massimo Moratti who was alive when Christian Vieri was playing.

And Christian Vieri is absolutely an Inter Legend. He does not need to be LGI. His goal tally speaks for itself: absolutely loved him!

Massimo’s son is Angelomario and was a Director back in those days.

Massimo's son made the call.

In fairness, we got Cannavaro instead of Nesta who was considered to be at the same level. He wasn't great here because we either played 3 at the back which didn't suit him or he was injured. And he was threatened/influenced by Moggi to force a transfer. We don't know if the same would have happened with Nesta.

The Gamarra part was just a random thing by Vieri to make the story sound more important. Our bid for Nesta was rejected anyway.
Gamarra was signed in spring of 2002 as a free agent. The Nesta stuff was in early August. The deal collapsed and two days later we signed Cannavaro...

Thing about Nesta is that he had zero intentions of ever leaving Lazio and only after Galliani threatened that he'd relegate them (acting as Lega chairman) he was sold to Milan and only Milan.

People don't remember this, but Nesta was pretty much like Totti in that one. He just had much worse owners. Nesta rejected Real Madrid twice, but not directly as he pretty much told Cragnotti not to accept any bids as he didn't want to leave his team. Cragnotti fucked him hard and gave him a director's role aside from being the team captain, so the other players started hating him because he was "management" and they were due salaries and lots of stories about Nesta getting two salaries from Lazio while his teammates got zero [in almost a year] were circulating at the time. It was ridiculous. I guess that's the only reason he accepted to leave at that time because the pressure was getting to him on a daily basis.

Happy Birthday to the GOAT 😁 seriously though, Vieri is my favourite Inter player of all time and as fate would have it - my son shares his birthday with him. My JOY doubled and my fandom forever. BOBOGOL! 🥹
