Yeah according to reports during the spring, United and Villa were interested. If they made any concrete offers to the club, we would have known about it. And also, if there were concrete offers made to the player, we would have known about it. Only thing we got out was Dumfries asked 5M net from us.

From this information we should be able to say that if those clubs had talks with Dumfries' agent, they didn't offer anywhere close to that 5M and then he ended up accepting our 4M net offer. Since moving from an established status at Inter to United is a risk, let alone moving to clearly inferior club Villa, so doing such move without a getting more money vs staying at Inter didn't make sense.

If I'm remembering accurately, Dumfries had a good first season in 21/22, his second was average at best and last year he was disappointing. That's not a great return really, even taking into account his modest fee.

Just look at the longevity of these so-called contract extension talks and how it all developed with ups and downs, and you can't get any other conclusion than both sides wanted out, especially inter. Basically, both parties waited until they couldn't anymore, hence this half-assed contract renewal news where you get a feeling of huge "meh" from both sides while reading it. And It's still not official

Even in his prime here, dumfries was around the level of darmian, maybe only for short periods of time a more favorable option. Darmian was just better defensively and dumfries brought more physicality, but in general it was always a flip of a coin who plays. Only in recent times when dumfries kinda regressed (not because of contract talks imo) inzaghi saw darmian as a safer option. But it was always a case we badly needed an upgrade there.

Look at the last game against torino, all our goals came from the left side, while the right was competing who can rack up more safe back passes. Or if you want to look at it the other way both of our wingbacks need barella there to function semi decently, that's how inept offensively they are. That's totally inexcusable if we want to have big ambitions, especially in cl.

He’s a solid rwb with good physical characteristics and grit. He’s not a world-beater like Hakimi obviously, but that’s okay if we have other world-beaters. Just wish he wasn’t so clumsy defending in our box…

Anyway. I hope this gets done soon because we need him. If we had a Dimarco or even a Carlos Augusto for the right side it would be different, but we don’t. Darmian will be gone at the end of the season or next and we’ll be left with TJ (if he’s still around) and no one else.

The only thing he’s missing is goals. And he’s proved that he can do that in Monza. Augusto has had the misfortune of having Bastoni and Dimarco in front of him in his positions, 2 of the best in the game.

Football is more interesting because it's played by athletes that will make mistakes and that aren't superhuman.

Augusto is solid, defensively and tactically solid rather than Dumfries.

Dumfries best performance found at his Netherland NT, not Inter.

Dumfries is benched permanently by Darmian now. Only started twice this season. We really need an upgrade over him. It will not take long for Frimpong to start over him in the Dutch NT. Giving him an extension at 4 mln a season means we ar stuck with him for the coming years. I’m honestly in doubt if it isn’t better to let him go for free coming summer at this stage.

He's the left-sided version of Darmian and has surprised me with what a good actual defender he is. I think it was easy to get a bit thrown by what to expect from him when his goals and assists were really strong in his last Monza season, yet we have seen next to nothing from him in a dynamic, attacking sense.

In some ways it's good to have a mix of styles at wing-back with a more defensive and a more attacking option on either side, however as there are so few goals from midfield then I think this puts more attacking onus on the wing backs and the only remotely reliable option there is out of the five in the squad is Di Marco.
