The former striker and treble winner will represent the team at official events in China and Singapore from 18 to 29 July

MILAN - Nerazzurri legend Diego Milito will be Inter's tour ambassador for the club's tour of China and Singapore from 18 to 29 July.

The treble hero, who is already a member of Inter Forever, will represent the club at all official events during the team's stay in Asia. He will get to meet local fans during dedicated Inter Club get-togethers, as well as attending meetings with sponsors and the media.

SINGAPORE - Diego Milito, Inter's tour ambassador in the Far East, was met by swathes of fans in Singapore before answering questions from supporters via the club's official Facebook page.

Unsurprisingly, there were lots of questions about 22 May 2010: "It's hard to explain what I felt that night in Madrid. It was a dream come true for all of us and the Inter fans and it gives me goosebumps just talking about it. Everything I experienced at Inter - the trophies and my relationship with the fans - was much bigger than the Ballon d'Or. I believe Kiev was the key moment in that Champions League-winning campaign. We were all but out but we played brilliantly in the second half and turned things around."

That whole year was unforgettable: "I joined Inter when I was 30 and I couldn't have asked for anything more at that time. I hoped to win silverware and thankfully we did so. I had dreamed of playing at San Siro ever since I was a child growing up watching Italia 90. We were a very close-knit squad and team full of top players. Sneijder, Pandev, Eto'o and I all played really well together. Samuel was the biggest match-winner I ever played with. He had so much character and desire and a great work ethic. Zanetti was always an example for everyone and a legend of world football, while Mourinho was one of the best coaches I played under. He backed me and wanted me at Inter and I owe him so much. I think the Champions League last-16 win in London a few days on from defeat at Catania drove us onto winning the treble."

Milito also gave his thoughts on the current crop: "There have been lots of changes and we must be patient. They're a good team with lots of technical ability in the middle of the park and Borja Valero will be a very useful signing. I hope Inter can soon return to competing at the top in Italy and Europe - I really do. The club's history means Inter must always strive for the top. If I had to give Icardi a piece of advice, I'd say you can always learn something in training. Mauro has already achieved a lot and will continue to. He has great potential, has scored lots of goals and there are plenty more to come."

Diego is also enjoying his current role of tour ambassador: "It's a wonderful, prestigious opportunity. I'm proud every time I represent the Nerazzurri. I didn't expect this sort of reception in China and Singapore so I'd like to thank everyone. As for whether I could one day coach Inter, I don't know. I'm still doing my badges in Argentina for the moment. Meanwhile I'm available for Inter Forever, Toldo keeps pestering me about it!"

Finally, a word on Milan: "It's a beautiful city, a special place. I feel a little Italian having lived there for many years. My daughter was born there too. I love Italy and I'm always going back. Italians and Argentines are very similar after all."

Former Napoli director of sport Pierpaolo Marino revealed an interesting anecdote about Diego Milito and how he could have possibly missed the triplete season with Inter: “I was dealing with Real Zaragoza for Milito and during the lunch, a waiter heard everything then passed it on to a journalist and the next day the journalist went all out in the newspaper and allowed Genoa to get in the race.”

Diego Milito revolutionizing Racing Club and Argentinian football

Even before Diego Milito scored the goals that won the 2010 Champions League final, thereby securing the treble for Inter Milan, he had a mission on his mind that meant even more to him.

The striker had always been keenly observant of how the clubs he played for work behind the scenes. He remained a huge supporter of Racing and from his time in Europe soon realised just how much was missing from his beloved childhood club, and the Argentine game in general.

It dawned on Milito how dysfunctional it all was, and how even the introduction of innovations considered standard in Europe could have striking effects in his home country.

Argentine football is a conservative, complacent mess, producing players by the fortune of their size and culture rather than any design.

“There is no process,” Huerta says. “Everything changes constantly. And there are times when crucial decisions are made by someone who does not know anything.”

That was the first thing Milito looked to change. He wanted every football decision made at Racing to be people who fully understood the game.

Milito stands on top of all of this. There are two huge pictures of him in the rustic light blue Racing academy building. Everyone thinks it fitting, as Huerta explains.

To follow up on this - Racing Club clinched the Superliga this past weekend with a round to spare, winning their first league trophy since 2014 and only their second league trophy since 2001. Grande, Il Principe.
