Congrats to Portugal..not that they were better, though..

Ricardo..great saves.. :star:

I agree with those who said the winner of this match has absolutely no chance against Brasil/France(Brasil 99%)..

The heart is a bloom
Shoots up through the stony ground
There's no room
No space to rent in this town

You're out of luck
And the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck
And you're not moving anywhere

You thought you'd found a friend
To take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand
In return for grace

It's a beautiful day
Sky falls, you feel like
It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away

You're on the road
But you've got no destination
You're in the mud
In the maze of her imagination

You love this town
Even if that doesn't ring true
You've been all over
And it's been all over you

It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
It's a beautiful day

Touch me
Take me to that other place
Teach me
I know I'm not a hopeless case

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the Bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colors came out

It was a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
Beautiful day

Touch me
Take me to that other place
Reach me
I know I'm not a hopeless case
What you don't have you don't need it now
What you don't know you can feel it somehow
What you don't have you don't need it now
Don't need it now
Was a beautiful day

By the way it will probably more interesting to see how C Ronaldo and Rooney get on in Uniteds first pre season training! I dont think they will spend their weekend together, thats for sure
Further, it will also be interesting to see how the patriotic English Man U fans would be towards C Ronaldo when the season starts.

Might never happened though as C Ronaldo apparently wants to move to RM!

I hope rooney kicks the living shit out of ronaldo when he sees him agian. Ronaldo is a bloody muppet.

Hargreaves, Ferdinand, Crouch deserve medal for there performance today. They fukin owned. All the lads were brilliant and im very proud with all of them. I'm sad with Rooney but we all know he has a bit of a temper. Good job ref to and despite being an argie i think he did an excelent job.

I feel bad for all of England's long servers like Beckham, Rio and A.Cole. You'd think England would have this one handed to the on a silver platter but that's England's luck for you I guess.

Owen Hargreaves gave the performance of his life today.

Penalty curse sends England out

Rob Woollard | Gelsenkirchen, Germany

01 July 2006 08:05

Ten-man England were sent crashing out of the World Cup on Saturday, losing a penalty shoot-out to Portugal after a controversy packed quarterfinal battle.

Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo scored the decisive spot-kick to hand Portugal a 3-1 shoot-out victory and shatter England's dream of a first World Cup for 40 years.

England's players, who saw star striker Wayne Rooney dramatically sent off and skipper David Beckham tearfully substituted in the second half, were left in shellshock as Portugal celebrated at the AufSchalke Arena.

Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher all saw penalties saved by Portugal keeper Ricardo, while Simao and substitute Helder Postiga netted Portugal's other penalties.

Portugal, who beat England on spot-kicks at Euro 2004, will now face either France or Brazil in Wednesday's semifinal in Munich while England were left to contemplate their fifth exit on penalties in eight tournaments since 1990.

It was also the third time in three tournaments that England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson had seen his side beaten by a team coached by Brazilian World Cup winner Luiz Felipe Scolari.

After a relatively incident-free first half, the match exploded into life in the opening 15 minutes of the second period, with legitimate English claims for a penalty turned down, captain Beckham substituted and Rooney sent off.

The penalty appeal claim came on 50 minutes when Beckham's cross from the edge of the area hit Nuno Valente's arm. Despite strong England claims, Argentinean referee Horacio Elizondo waved play on.

Beckham, who had appeared to hurt an ankle in an earlier challenge from Valente, was substituted shortly afterwards.

The Real Madrid midfielder was replaced by winger Aaron Lennon on 52 minutes and could be seen in tears as he sat dejectedly in the dug-out. Tottenham teenager Lennon made an immediate impact, however.

England should have taken the lead after a brilliant run down the right flank by Lennon, who beat two men and cut back, only for Rooney and Joe Cole to both fail to connect on 59 minutes.

But just when it looked as if Lennon's introduction might have turned the game England's way, Rooney saw red in a decision that is bound to be the subject of furious debate.

Rooney appeared to have been fouled by Portugal centre-half Ricardo Carvalho but, as he battled to break clear, he rashly sunk his boot into the Chelsea player's groin, sparking a melee.

Portugal's players surrounded referee Elizondo, who hesitated before producing a red card, stunning England's players.

England's bench reacted furiously with the substituted Beckham having to be restrained as he gesticulated angrily from the touchline.

A stunned Rooney trudged off disconsolately as Eriksson scrambled to reorganise, hauling off Joe Cole for gangling striker Peter Crouch as England switched to 4-4-1.

Rooney's dismissal signalled the start of a sustained Portuguese onslaught, and England had keeper Paul Robinson to thank for a superb save from Luis Figo on 78 minutes that kept them in the match.

Robinson had to be on his toes again moments later with a low save from a fierce drive by Hugo Viana.

England clung on desperately but could have taken the lead after Lennon was fouled near the edge of the area. A thunderous 25-yard free-kick from Lampard was parried by Ricardo as far as Lennon, who just failed to connect with his follow-up.

Amazingly England might have even snatched victory in injury time. The tireless Owen Hargreaves broke down the left but his low cross was scooped over the bar by centre-half John Terry.

With neither side managing to make the breakthrough, Elizondo signalled for extra-time and 30 tension-filled minutes followed as England produced another one of their famous rearguard actions.

Extra-time saw England continue to look for a goal on the counter-attack, but it was Portugal who had the best chances, a 102nd-minute strike from Simao stopped by Robinson, while three minutes later Ronaldo just clipped the bar.

Portugal put the English goal under unbearable pressure in the final minutes of extra-time but were unable to find a breakthrough, ensuring the spot-kick drama. -- AFP

:dielaugh: :dielaugh: Nice one Fabio! Shabaz does have quite a sad life ;)

J. Zanetti - we dont have patriotic Man Utd fans in England. Man Utd fans are all glory hunters that all live in London. These people rely annoy me. I think they all support Chelsea now though.

This is the end for Ronaldo at Utd. There is no way he can ever look at Rooney in the eyes after he makes suggestive remarks to the ref and try to get him sent off. He is meant to be Rooneys mate. What an unloyal moron he is. Whichever ground he plays at in England next season, he will experience abuse like he has never experienced in his life. I'm sick to death of him. Go away ronaldo - now!

The thing is Ronaldo's career is stalling in Man u. But in Real he could continue improving his skills.

Note that this is coming from a Barca fan!

People talk about stupid refereeing, but how about the stupid players!!! Rooney proved that he is a moron! Figo makes me ashamed sometimes. He is 34 or so now, and in the twilight of his career, but still dives and play acts! As long as you have stupid players, you will have stupid refeering.

Hagreaves :star: :star: :star: Damn those English media and fans who hate this guy! He is the best DM to play for England since Paul Ince, and still, no respect!

England should have won this game. Portugal were dissimated and didn't even try, but the English players never looked confident.

lol @ Lampard

How can he improve it in a league where they pay to see such useless flicks??

It's also about intelligence...Messi is only 19 but his mind is old(cright Mobb Deep)

Ronaldo is older, but still stupid. That's the Quaresma-Ronaldo generation...both lack grey matter.

Co-sign. I was rooting for England.

I hope Rooney beats the living hell out of Cristiano Ronaldo if they ever meet again. His career at Man Utd is certainly done with now, though.

Rickardo, Lion's Heart, for the second time. ;)

I said this before. England + Holland + Spain, are the most overrated teams in the universe.

And Rooney deserved what he got. He's on my dark list, with people like Gilardino, Pirlo, Riquelme, Deco, Nedved etc etc.

This is the best season ever!!

Juve and their types are going to Serie B.
England are out.
Holland are out.
Spain are out.
Ronaldo sucks.
Ronaldinho sucks.
Inter's transfers are going great.
Shevchenko moves to Chelsea.
Materazzi scores in the world cup.
Gilardino sucks.
Zambrotta and Buffon proved that they shouldn't be in a club like juve.
Pacman deserved what he deserved, him and Sorin + Riquelme.
Mascherano proves that he's a great great player, same goes to Tevez and Ayala.
Milan win nothing.
France beat Brazil.
Italy are going forward.
An Inter player finally dives well!
Portugal beat England.
Rooney-out, in two ways.
Let's wait for more..

I love this season. ( Starting from Inter winning Coppa Italia ).
