If his contract expired in 2022 we wouldn't have loaned him to Cagliari.

When you a loan a player whom you think you could one day sell, you usually extend their contract. For instance, when we loaned Icardi to PSG we made him sign a one year contract extension. It's to prevent the player from being in the last year of his contract when he returns from loan. We probably extended Dalbert two or three years ago when we were naive enough to believe we could sell him.

I always wondered about this. Is there a law that bans clubs from loaning out a player whose contract expires at the end of the season. Juve somehow loaned Costa to gremio to the end of his contract(this summer) which suggest is doable. But we terminated Mario instead of loaning him and took a loss which suggest is not doable.

We already hired the guy who was willing to pay 20m when we had already an agreement at 8m.

Walter Sabatini.
Ausillio shared half the blame. Don't carry on with your "good is Ausillio bad is anyone else", it's boring.

Ausilio wanted Dalbert initially, true. But he stopped after Nice demanded 12m and pursued another target. Sabatini then pulled the trigger at a 20m valuation some 3 weeks later...

That was not what he said:

Ausilio believes Walter Sabatini is an ideal foil for him at Inter

Piero Ausilio believes Walter Sabatini is an ideal foil for him at Inter. “I’ve started having two or three cigarettes after dinner…”

rB8Re1n8XvSAF0aKAAA7qvfn_O4845.jpg

“Unlike what a lot of people think, we’re friends and we’ve respected each other for a long time,” he told Tuttosport.
“We came across each other a bit by accident, but we find it easy to work with each other. “We’ve found a balance and the beautiful thing is that we have a similar view of football: there’ll be ten players I like, nine that he likes and vice versa.
When I noted down the names of Skriniar and Dalbert, he told me to sign them right away.
“We complete each other and his experience enriches me: I saw him more than my wife over the summer and, as a passive smoker, I’ve started having two or three cigarettes after dinner…
“People say we have a small squad, but we’re only in one competition until January. Spalletti wanted 20 players and three goalkeepers…
“If he’s calm, I trust him. We signed three players from other Serie A teams, and they’re doing very well. As for the three that came from abroad, we know it takes time: Karamoh is young, Cancelo had an injury that kept him out for 45 days and Dalbert, who’s on a similar path to Emerson Palmieri, is competing with a very strong Nagatomo.
“There was a deep scouting mission for Skriniar. We never thought of him as an alternative. He was immediately identified as the player to partner Miranda.
“Borja Valero was Spalletti’s first target and now it seems to me that many people have changed their thoughts about him.
“Like Pirlo to Juve? Due to his age and small outlay, it’s a fair comparison. Borja Valero is the player that’s always there when his teammates need a hand.”

Sabatini was working mainly for Suning other team in China. Ausilio was in charge at Inter, so Sabatini could not pull trigger or anything here. Saba might agree, but Ausillio did sign the offer, period.

You picked a quote that doesn't explain the process nor the timing.

It's like someone saying that Ronaldo signed for Milan from Barcelona and argue it's correct just because he ended up there 10 years later...
