to be honest, personaly I think one of the big challenges in Italy is the lack of professional football. Really you have, what, 2 maybe 3 tiers? Where you've got professional teams and then you run out pretty quickly. And even at Serie A level, now, the worst teams are really a long way off Serie A standards. Spreading more money more evenly will inevitably help, but I dunno.

Completely off.

All more "professionalism" will do is add more foreign (EU) players. The number of Italian players that are being developed is probably steady or moving in the same pace as that of Germany, Spain, France etc. What you're proposing is what got us in the 2010s in the first place. Fill the roster spots with a bunch of players from the European Union which will go against Italian players as they can find 'ready' and 'mature' players for cheap and they won't need to gamble on whether or not the kids are ready to play.

The gap between the bottom teams is not due to some lack of professionalism in Italian football. It's only due to financial reasons. And the reason is, they cannot afford these foreign players that others can. The bottom 2-3 Serie A clubs typically have roughly 8 foreign players whilst the rest have 15+.

Less professional clubs would help as there are too many professional clubs with very bad financials. A relegation feeds into bankruptcy which means that young talented players don't get too much time on the field as they have too many ups and downs in their performances compared to older players. Only a few clubs have realized that developing talented players could be a way to generate money.

More professional clubs = more academies = better infrastructure for players to break through at. Also, it means more clubs for 'less reputation' players to get another shot at their career.

I'm not saying it solves the problem, but I do think it'd help - albeit it'd need (for example with England) to be coupled with a strong policy around home grown player registration, or (Germany) strong cultural identity driving domestic player development rather than signing internationally.

As you point out, its not like Serie B is filled with international players as it stands - there's a preference to go for the mediocre italian rather than developing them.

I dunno. I think big clubs are fairly culpable as well - for example we seldom produce players who even sustain Serie A level in their career, its only more recent years that our averge academy player even has a professional career, many of them retire young.

A lot of them are.

Serie B also has had strong quotas anyway, so teams cannot go 7+18 there like in Serie A iirc.

But half of the foreigners are typically failed Primavera imports of the top teams that find refuge in smaller Italian clubs. Higher professional standards will just increase the number of these guys and the mediocre Italians that fill Serie B spots will drop to Lega Pro, along with the lesser foreign talent that cannot get Serie B deals.

There's no strong correlation between home grown talent and professionalism really, at least not after until a certain standard is met. Most 'shit' tier leagues that have decent standards and do well in Europe tend to have shit national teams while there are strong national teams where the domestic league is beyond salvation in terms of player quality.

More professional clubs = more competition of sponsors and other revenue sources = less focus on academies due to both money reasons and because young players are not as stable in their performances = even more shitty infrastructure.

Italy doesn't have a money tree for more professional clubs to pick from. There are already too many clubs trying to pick money from it. The amounts of bankruptcy tells the story.

out of interest, do you know off hand how many clubs in Serie A/B would be compliant if there was an 4+4 club+home rule imposed in the league?

It is imposed iirc and as a result, all of them comply. I think B has stricter rules but they constantly change them.

This might sound absurd, but yesterday was the only time I've ever really been impressed by Bonucci's defending ability.

He never seemed quite on the level of Barzagli or Chiellini. But last night was different.

Giorgio Chiellini’s foul on Bukayo Saka has caused controversy and some English fans even started a petition to replay the Final!

Lol so much salt! :yao:

Also there are reports Italy and Argentina will meet in a friendly at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples.

I'm loving the reactions from England, pretending as if Southgate is to blame for losing the cup, not recognizing that without him they'd be out from the round of 16 possibly.
On top of it all, they say that England lost it and not that Italy won or should have won. Everything about is how England lost it and not how Italy won. A team that was playing like a mouse being chased by a cat for 100 minutes out of 120...

I thought only Italy would be that racist towards dark people but wtf is going on in England?

At first I thought they were making it up acting like 1 troll comment is the end of the world by supporting Rashford against racism to move the attention of Italy winning/them losing. I thought this because I couldn't manage to find any comments on their instagram being attacked.

Or maybe I just hate England's view of football 🤷‍♂️
