well, to some extent there is a "cultural" divide in the Country, southern and northern people tend to do things quite differently, food included. quite often the same dishes, but prepared in a different way.
as for the thickness, in the north they tend to prepare slightly thinner pizzas.
i have seen stuff in central and northern italy that not many people would consider buying where i live. but i'm not saying we southerners do it better, just in a different way.
in southern italy we also have a kind of pizza a lot thicker than the usual but prepared with a different kind of pasta, more similar to the one used for pastries. i might have missed it, but i have never seen it in milano nor in rome for that matter.
in naples the fried pizza is relatively common. in the cafés of rome if you ask for a "pizzetta" ("little pizza"), they might serve you a thing that in other parts of the country is called focaccia (no need for a translation here) with just a bit of tomato as a topping.
