Today F1 2020 finally begins, in Zeltweg (Austria), where they are going to race again next week (oddity of the virus-dictated schedule, I guess).

Race starts at 15.10 local time.

surprise surprise, the Mercedes are in first grid, Verstappen Will start in third position. The Ferraris are back in the grid: seventh Leclerc, 11th Vettel.

Shame that there's been so many retirements this race, especially for Max. Hopefully Bottas holds the lead but apparently both Mercedes drivers were told that the cars have critical gearbox issues.

McLaren and Racing Point so far looking like the most improved teams as they have been impressive. Ferrari not so much.

Hamilton once again ruining Albon's chances of a podium and going for a potential first place, but at least he got hit with a 5 second penalty this time which means he gets dropped to fourth. Great job by Leclerc to get second though after a not so good qualifying.

yesterday i had a somewhat heated discussion with some hamilton fans: i said, and i maintain, that he basically threw albon off on purpose.

when you run at 200 or 300 km/h, there's a very fine line between fully conscious and unconscious decisions: in that instant he wasn't able to maintain control and brought out the worst of himself. which is what schumacher did a few times in his career, and for which he was (and still is) given stick.

a 5-second penalty was kind of generous, there was more than enough for a 10-second one.

also, alfa romeo mechanics should fucking learn how to tighten the nuts, for crying out loud.

Renault are expected to announce tomorrow Fernando Alonso will drive for the team in 2021. I have huge respect for the driver Alonso but i don't see the point of this move.

Another disaster for Ferrari in qualifying :yao:

I'm not a fan of his, but I gotta admit that was a masterclass in the rain by Hamilton to get pole. Over 1.2 seconds faster than second place..

Wtf have Ferrari done with this year car? They have managed to be slow both on dry and wet. They fucked up the engine. They fucked up the downforce. Did they get anything right in that car?

So it's going to be pretty much like last season, the only difference being that Ferrari has gotten even worse.

Only bottas can challenge Hamilton for the title, if the former has his absolute best season and the latter his absolute worst.

Verstappen would also be in the title challenge if he drove a Mercedes.

Hamilton is a great driver but he also has the best car. For me the F1 GOAT was and remains Ayrton Senna. What he did at Donington with an inferior car was out of this world and i have yet to see another driver coming close to that.

Yeah I agree, most champions in different era's had that one team with a slightly superior car, but with Hamilton, Mercedes have been like juve and everyone else lagging miles behind (apart from the odd race with Red Bull challenging). It's hard for the best of drivers to compete with that car. I still think Brawn GP had the greatest car ever though when fucking Jenson Button won it. It was like watching an F1 car race against go karts.

I'm going to be biased because it's the era I mainly watched when I was younger, but Schumi for me will always be the GOAT.

Also, speaking of Ferrari drivers - just when you think it couldnt get any worse for Ferrari with qualifying, Leclerc takes himself and Vettel out of the race immediately  Nightmare for them.

I haven't been following F1 as long as most of you, but during Alonso's peak years at Renault wasn't his car always inferior to Ferrari's?

I even forgot when I completely lost interest in this. I was always checking results every now and then but haven't bothered in almost two decades. I even attended a couple of them but hardly knew the cars and drivers :D

Been trying for a couple of years to get back to this but it just doesn't draw me. Last year I think it was kinda more fascinating than it normally was which was what made me reconsider but still, not sure how to get back into this.

I guess you mean the two championships Alonso won in 2005 and 2006, right? In 2005, the title was decided between Alonso and Kimi. Ferrari were struggling a lot with tyres and they weren't competitive in that season. McLaren had the faster car but it was extremely unreliable and that was the reason Alonso won the title. In 2006, the title was decided between Alonso and Schumi. Renault had a faster car than Ferrari at the start of the season till their suspension system was deemed illegal so they had to drop it around midseason. Since then Ferrari had the better car but Alonso still managed to win the title. It's a strange coincidence Alonso usually ended up driving inferior cars. In a matter of 15 years Alonso had the chance to drive the best car of the grid only twice. Renault of 2006 (at least till midseason) and McLaren of 2007.

I personally thought Renault had the better car back then in 05 & 06, even Fisichella who imo was an average driver managed to compete and finish top 4th. Maybe that's because I was a Schumacher fan and that was my excuse :p

If we go by that logic, I think hakkinen is the best driver. That mclaren was a piece of shit and he was slapping everyone until his engine would give up

I don't like Ferrari, mostly because they are owned by the agnellis. So it warms my heart to see them fail so miserably, both Vettel and Leclerc were lapped today.
