Zhang, Marotta & Ausilio Tried To Convince Samaden To Stay At Inter Milan But Feels Time For A New Challenge, Italian Media Report​

All of Inter President Steven Zhang, CEO Bepp Marotta, and Sporting Director Piero Ausilio tried to convince Roberto Samaden to stay on as the head of the Nerazzurri’s youth academy.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInter1908, who report that all of the Nerazzurri’s directors made an attempt to get the 56-year-old to reconsider his decision to step down, but that his mind was already made up.

It has now been made clear that Samaden will leave Inter at the end of the current season, with his contract with the club running out at the end of June.

It is not clear what the next chapter will be for the youth academy director, who could find a role at a different club, and has also been linked with a possible position within the Italian FA.

What is certain, however, is that Samaden feels that it is time for something different, after an association with Inter that had lasted 33 years.

Given that Samaden has been widely considered to have done an excellent job in his role, the club’s directors had been hoping that he would not leave.

Zhang tried to convince the 56-year-old to reconsider, whilst Marotta, who had in fact tried to bring Samaden to Juventus in 2013, is also among his admirers, as is Ausilio.

However, according to FCInter1908, Samaden feels firmly that, despite having had a very positive tenure at Inter, he is ready to seek a new challenge, and so he graciously declined the Nerazzurri’s directors and made his decision to leave at the end of the season final.

Atalanta Academy Director Maurizio Costanzi In Running To Replace Roberto Samaden As Inter Milan’s Head Of Youth Academy, Italian Media Report​

Atalanta Academy Director Maurizio Costanzi has joined Beppe Giavardi to replace Roberto Samaden as the head of Inter’s youth academy at the end of the current season.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri could look to bring in Costanzi rather than promoting Giavardi from within.

Samaden is set to step down as the head of Inter’s youth academy at the end of this season, ending a 33-year association with the club, and it is not yet decided who will take his place in the role.

According to the Gazzetta, Costanzi is one possibility, and given that his contract with Atalanta runs out at the end of the current season, he could well be brought in.
The 65-year-old had been the Academy Director at Chievo Verona prior to take over at Atalanta in 2014.

Giavardi, currently the deputy to Samaden, is also in the running should the Nerazzurri decide to promote from within.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, who report that the likes of Palermo, Cremonese, and Como are among the clubs ready to make Samaden an offer, whilst a switch to a role in the Italian FA is also a possibility although less likely.

Numero Diez also wrote that Palermo owners City Football Group would be keen on bringing in head of Inter youth academy Roberto Samaden. They are ready to push to bring in Samaden, as part of their ambitious rebuild of the Sicilian side.

There was a meeting at Oporto between Inter management and Catellani, who seems to be on pole. Castellazzi chose to stay at PSG women. Among the candidates there's also Massimo Tarantino, Siena sporting director.

He was at Chievo prior to that for a few years and he's young.

These guys are judged by more things than the number of good players their academies produce. Who knows, maybe he's a gem.

According to Gazzetta, Catellani will be the new Inter youth director. Prior to talks with Inter he was close to Modena but he could have never said no to Inter, also because he's an Interista.

Interesting to see what will happen. This guy is very young and it might be a risk to take him. On the other hand perhaps a young person brings new ideas and innovations and that is what Inter and especially Italy need in terms of the youth academy. I'm curious on basis of which qualities he came out best for Inter.

Italian Media Detail Why Inter Milan Could Have To Pay Fine To Appoint SPAL’s Catellani As Academy Director​

Inter could have to pay a fine in order to appoint SPAL Academy Director Andrea Catellani as the replacement for Roberto Samaden for next season.

This according to Italian broadcaster SportItalia, who report that given that the 34-year-old already had an agreement with Modena, the Nerazzurri could have to pay a fine in order for having him break that agreement to join and replace Samaden.

Catellani looks to have emerged as Inter’s main target to replace Samaden when the latter steps down from his role as the head of the Nerazzurri’s youth academy at the end of the season.

However, one obstacle to this is the fact that Catellani, who had played for Modena as well as Spezia and Sassuolo during his playing days already has an agreement with the Emilian club.

After retiring from playing, Catellani has held roles as the Academy Director of Chievo Verona and now at SPAL, and he had looked set to join SPAL’s Emilian Serie B rivals Modena for next season after advanced negotiations.

However, Inter have stepped in and are ready to appoint Catellani following the news that Samaden will leave his role at the end of the season.

In order to do so, however, it could be necessary for the Nerazzurri to pay a fine.

Inter have extended the contract of young winger Enoch Owusu until the end of June 2025.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the Nerazzurri are keen to keep hold of the 18-year-old, and that they want to avoid a situation like the one with current Leeds United start Willy Gnonto.

Owusu has been one of the real breakout stars within Inter’s youth team this season.

The Italian international, who has made appearances for the Azzurri up to the Under-18 level but is yet to be capped for the senior team, has played a key role in what has been a fairly up-and-down season for Christian Chivu’s team over the season to date.

Owusu scored a headed goal in a 1-0 win over Juventus on Friday afternoon, a result which was vital for the Nerazzurri to keep their hopes alive heading into the final stages of the Under-19 championship.

This only underlines the quality which the young winger possesses, and as such Inter see him as a very important player for the shorter and especially longer term future.

Accordingly, the Nerazzurri are very wary of the possibility of losing hold of Owusu just at the point when he is really starting to hit his stride within the senior game.

CHANGES TO PRIMAVERA TO ENCOURAGE DEVELOPING ITALIAN TALENTS​

The Lega Serie A council has introduced a number of rule changes to help promote the development of Italian players in the Primavera leagues.

TMW highlights how the maximum age limit of the Primavera leagues will be raised from Under-19 to Under-20, starting from the 2024-25 season, and changes have been made to the squad registration rules.

The first of which is a requirement to use ‘local’ players – defined as someone who has been registered with the club for two seasons as well as any FIGC-affiliated clubs – starting from the 2023-24 season.

The second squad change, apart from the reduction to a maximum of 22, is that a number of players must be eligible for the Italian national team.
Both these changes are being enacted to encourage clubs to grow and develop their Italian talents, helping to increase the options available to the Azzurri.
These changes will start next season and will grow over time, as seen below.

• 2023-24 season: presence in the squad of at least five local players and five players eligible to be called up for the Italian national teams.
• 2024-25 season: presence in the squad of at least eight local players and eight players who are eligible to be called up for the Italian national teams.
• 2025-26 season: presence in the squad of at least 10 local players and 10 players who are eligible to be called up for the Italian national teams.
