I just noticed Schalke are comfortably in last place. I knew that they were in a bad spot financially, but I didn't know things were going that badly for them. The squad is definitely not that bad.

Yeah. Schalke are certainly going down. They have already accepted their fate. Their downfall started in January 2020 when Wagner was still their coach and it never stopped. I have lost count how many coaches they have changed in the last 12 months. They came really close to breaking the ultimate Bundesliga record with most matches without a win (31 matches by Tasmania Berlin).

The team already needed big changes at the end of last season but sadly for them they had no money to spend. Pandemic and their chairman coronavirus scandal didn't help. But if you ask me we need to go back to 2016-2019 when Christian Heidel was their sporting director in order to find the true reasons for their downfall. Many expensive signings that didn't pay off while failing to get money from the players who came from their ranks and leaving for free.

Schalke is the prime example that investments mean jack shit if you don't have the right management. They were getting lots of money from Gazprom sponsorship all these years, they had a new stadium and yet they achieved nothing of importance. They are probably the worst run club in Germany. Hopefully relegation is the wake up call they needed.

Out of curiosity I looked up the worst-ever Bundesliga team, and Schalke have the same number of points as they did (10, adjusted for 3 pts/win). I assume they'll pick up a few more draws, so they'll probably do better than that. But still shockingly bad.

I was also surprised to see Bayern's defensive record is not so great. The teams placed 2-5, 7, and 12 all have fewer goals conceded. (Would've also included Dortmund in 6th until last weekend). I guess all the criticisms of their high defensive line last summer weren't entirely invalid.

Bayern defence has been leaky throughout the season and that's why i don't trust them in CL. They have been saved from their attack. Lewandowski is in insane form and on the road to break Gerd Müller record of most Bundesliga goals in a season.

Pretty much. It's believed the team took its name from the founders common goal of immigrating to Tasmania. There's quite a story behind their only, and record breaking in a bad way, season in Bundesliga.

From wiki:

In 1965, Berlin's only Bundesliga side, Hertha BSC, had its license revoked and was relegated for breaking the league's player salary rules. The German Football Association wanted to keep a club in the city of Berlin for political reasons and this led to one of the strangest episodes in the Bundesliga's history.

Both Karlsruher SC and FC Schalke 04 tried to avoid being demoted by laying claim to Hertha's place. It was decided to suspend relegation for one season and increase the number of teams in the league from 16 to 18 to accommodate the two teams which would normally be promoted from the Regionalligen, the Regional Leagues being the leagues below the Bundesliga at the time. Cold War politics led to a space being held for a team from the former capital city to replace Hertha.

The winner of Regionalliga Berlin, Tennis Borussia Berlin, had failed to advance to the Bundesliga through the regular promotion round that saw Bayern Munich and Borussia Mönchengladbach move up. After the Regionalliga second-place finisher, Spandauer SV, refused an offer of promotion, the way was clear for third-place club Tasmania 1900 to take up the opportunity to represent Berlin in the Bundesliga — just two weeks before the start of the 1965–66 season.

A top performer in the relatively weak Regionalliga Berlin, Tasmania would find themselves seriously overmatched in the Bundesliga. Despite a season-opening 2–0 win over Karlsruher SC at the Olympiastadion, they would go on to become the worst team in league history — in a 34-game season they won only twice. They scored only 15 goals while conceding 108 and finished the season in last place earning just 8 of a possible 68 points. The only team not to beat Tasmania was 1. FC Kaiserslautern which managed only two draws (0–0 and 1–1) against them. The 0–0 result at Betzenberg was the only point earned by Tasmania away from their home stadium.

Bayern dominating Stuttgart, Davies got red card straight away and then they scored 4 goals. Crazy.

What is the opposite of a farmer league? A paleo/hunter gatherer league? Is there a keto league?

Xabi Alonso is set to take over Monchendgladbach next season. He's played under some of the greatest managers ever so it's going to be interesting to see how he gets them to play imo.

They will all play in suits with fresh haircuts every week.

But yeah, good for him, he's a boss already in my eyes.

That's so strange. Is Flick leaving on his own or is he thrown out? He has the best fucking record for Bayern, why would you not trust him?

Not really. Totally expected for Bundesliga fans. He has a terrible relationship with Bayern sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic (then again, who doesn't ). He wasn't supported in the transfer market last summer and with the departure of Rummenigge at the end of the season his influence inside the Bayern board will become even less. He will probably take over the Mannschaft job after the Euro where he had already worked in the past as Low assistant. As for Nagelsmann, he's a Bavarian and he has said many times his dream is to coach Bayern one day.

Speaking of Bundes coaches, there are rumours Adi Hutter, current Eintracht coach, is going to be the next Gladbach coach. So after losing their sporting director, Bobic, to Hertha, Eintract are also going to lose their coach. Curious to see if they can recover from this.

It would be great if they also lose Kostić and sell him to Inter :)

Anyone knows what happened to Thorgan Hazard and Brandt? Rarely hear their names these days.

Thorgan got injured a few times, especially the one in December 2020 was a nasty one. His previous season he had 7 goals and 13 assists, but this season he's just not playing.

Brandt plays a lot more, but his numbers are not impressive at all. Still a class player, don't let the numbers tell you otherwise, but both players were expected to do more.

Hazard struggled with injuries this season and along with the emergence of Geo Reyna and Dortmund switch to 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 he has barely played this season.

On the other hand, Brandt is a huge disappoinment. I don't like saying it because he had always been a personal favorite since his Leverkusen days but he's just bad. Especially since Favre got fired he has become worse and worse and he has lost his position in the starting lineup despite the injuries of Witsel and Delaney. He has fallen behind Dahoud and Bellingham in the midfield pecking order, and rightfully so, and he was poor even when he was used in attack. Hopefully Rose can help him save his career.
