Covered not in terms of personnel, but in terms of making them effective. From what I've seen in pre-season, our 2 CMs are largely passive and ineffective. They are almost always caught in "no man's land", always in transition, but always lagging behind the play. For example, when we're in attack, they are too deep to effectively help the attack. Yet, as soon as we lose the ball, they're then too high to help the defense and are always chasing, hence we're in a constant state of defending counter attacks.
On second thought, the problem is not the 3 in the back either. It's the entire CM line. The 2 wide players in midfield, just like the 2 CMs, are always in no man's land and help with nothing. Wide players are not helping in defense (except for obi, but then, he is not helping the attack) so our 2 wider CBs are often too wide (especially frog). Yet funnily enough, the wide players are not helping in attack either as they're not providing any crosses or going forward enough to penetrate defenses with overlapping runs.
We'll see what happens today v Palermo to see if there's any improvement with the midfield.
