An assist has to be assigned in the context of goalscoring. If it's just whomever touched it last, I don't think we need to keep track of that as it dilutes the effects of actual assists.

Best Forum NewcomerHe was the final person to give the pass to Dumfries. Watch the clip. Thuram got the ball from Sassuolo player and passed it to Dumfries. Check out 4:42 minutes of replay. I did not do pre assist, because the ball came out of Sassuolo player to Thuram, But the assist is legit.

But that's not really an assist.
An assist plays a catalytic part in getting a goal scored. That's why we had the "key contribution" metric here.
I am pretty sure Busquets got like 20 assists in his career simply for laying the ball off to Messi in the middle of the pitch, but if you want something to be rated as an assist, it needs to have an effort or at least spare some of the effort required from the attacker.
Dumfries getting the ball from a teammate there didn't get a goal scored. He stopped, saw around, dribbled, changed footing, shot and scored. That's not an assisted goal.
P.S. appreciate the effort and taking over, just sounding my usual disagreement to how badly assists are termed these days.
