This group is really a joke, if u compare it with the netherlands group or the italy group.... no one of this group deserve to be in 1/4 or semis, those are not teams to win a WC.

I missed all but the last 5 minutes of the game. In any case, Portugal are going well and will surely win the group.

Mehdi, I know you weren't impressed with him last time around, but I saw two outstanding tackles by Kaabi on C Ronaldo. I know Ronaldo is a clown, but there are two way he can be stopped: his stupidity and a smart defender (like Ashley Cole.) I think Kaabi has a great future ahead of him.

Once again, tell me more about him? :D

:D

I was pretty impressed by him too. In fact, he was the only one I was impressed with. Seriously, I never thought he would do THAT good against Ronaldo and Figo. I hope he gets a contract in Europe and works more on his game. He got great potential.

Kaebi started in the national team with 16 or something...he is from Khuzestan and he is an ethnic arab. He was for years our greatest talent and there was a lot of hype around him, but because of his body nature and making stupid mistakes, I always had my doubts about him defensively. But he showed that he has great potential and he almost shut down both Ronaldo and Figo. If the other players played with half his passion, we might have done better.

About Iran..well, me and some friends were in Frankfurt and we(mainly they) were around the team. The mood in the team was terrible, and there was no unity. Daei and players his age were a group, Karimi and players his age and younger were a group, Mahdavikia had beef with Daei and Rezaei, Hashemian is too nice of a person, and the two new guys Teymourian and Shojaei were kept away from the team anyway, because they were new and took away the place of other players. It was unbelievable..

We need to restart, we have some good players left in Mobali, Teymourian etc. and the important thing is that they are all midfields. We could try to build a team around a strong midfield and maybe do better next time, although it will be tougher than ever in 4 years to qualify for the World Cup. Saudi Arabia, Korea and Japan are always strong. Australia will be in too, China will try to do better, and Iran will have problems.

Thanks for the report Mehdi jan,
I too was impressed with Kaebi’s display against Portugal. Overall I though we put up a decent performance against a strong European team. Anyhow, I thought through out the game our lack of support for Hashemian was evident. The guy was way too isolated upfront without much support. I guess when you are being pressurised as we were at stages it’s hard to quickly move up and support your lone striker.
As for Kaebi again - I think Kaebi could do well either here in EPL or maybe in the Bundesliga.
Anyhow I said from the beginning that our key game was the Mexico one, though unfortunately our second half totally ruined it all. Our last game can now be trickier than we thought as Angola now have a chance to advance and will be very motivated. However the only thing that could be to our advantage is that our players can now play without any pressure.

Thanks for the report Mehdi.

Man, it's so sad when you make it to the World Cup and you still have the village mentality. The same thing plagued the Saudi NT in 2002. Report were that Sami El Jaber had a group and they clashed (physically) with a group led by Mohammed Nour (the guy who made the assist for the first goal against Tunisia, no.8 I think.)

Making it to the WC is so hard and it is a previlige. But then you have a-holes that can't manage an ice-cream cart business let alone a team, in charge of the team, things just go from worse to worse. They should be ashamed for letting down their passionate fans and embarassing their nation in front of the world.

Hopefully things will improve. Karimi and Kia have one world cup left in them and I hope it will be better next time around.

About Kaebi, it's good that you are impressed with him. I really saw professionalism and intelligence in him. I know that he didn't help Kia out much in the first game, but he knew it would be better not to wander out too much.

Normally, any full-back from the middle-east would go missing if he sees an opening and wouldn't think about backtracking quickly or covering up. That is what impressed me with Trabelsi and now with Kaebi. Hopefully confidence would come to him and he will be more offensive. That is an area I am yet to see how good he is at.

Finally, I agree with Ashkan, EPL or Bundesliga (preferrably) would suit him best. All the luck to him, it would be good if he plays with HSV or Bayern so that he can get help adapting from Karimi or Kia.

that's true...he showed good signs of intelligence and it's not easy to defend against figo and ronaldo but he did reaally reaally good.
he is raw material, I would even prefer him to play for a Dutch or Portuguese team, to get used to European football and learn more there. Germany and England are too early for him, but those leagues would be perfect.
he is the only one that can make it.

Btw. I feel sorry for the other pretty decent guy Teymourian. The guy has limited skills, but really worked his back off, but because of having no real lobby in the team, got criticised by Daei and Nekounam. I always thought of Nekounam to be a decent guy, but he ain't at all apparently.

It's a shame about the team, but I hope that with the inclusion of some players and Mehdi and Karimi keeping on, we will have a better team in 2010.

Portugal got it's third win in the World Cup, 2-1 over Mexico, but I'm a little disappointed with the Portuguese attitude. Portugal started well in the defence holding Mexico's attack, then with some quick counters we got a goal by Maniche, Mexico shaked a little and we got the second through a penalty kick (Simão).

It seemed a good day for Portugal, but then because of a huge defensive mistake Mexico got one back, after that Portugal seemed a bit shaky but it held until the break.

After the break the game became so boring, but when I thought the game was dead Mexico got a penalty, however they wasted it over the bar, it wasn't until some Mexican player got sent off that the game spiced up again and for Mexico's side.

In the last minutes Portugal played like a team of amateurs trying to hold the score, it was in this period that the Portuguese defence shaked again, Mexico could have scored but they didn't, so it's 3 wins and first place for Portugal.

P.S.: Portugal played without five main players (Pauleta, C. Ronaldo, Costinha, Deco and N. Valente) however that last 20 minutes can't be explained with just this.

Most Portuguese are hoping to get to the quarter-finals, however lady luck was a bit bad putting Argentina or Netherlands on our way, but we are confident that we can get in the top 8.

Pi, im surprised you are sad with portugals attitude in the game. They were already through and 5 top stars were withdrawn becuase they risked being booked. I thought it was a 5 star game for entertainment.

Portugal will destroy Holland in the next round easily. Holland have a rely poor team and portugals class will come through. One of the best players so far in this WC was got to be Miguel. His passing is exceptional and so is his work rate, but he did have a disapointing game against mexico. Portugal should drop Ronaldo for the rest of there games. He is more of a hinderence than a help

Portugal started well but it seemd like they got bored or something. I'm sad for the last 20/25 minutes, where Portugal played with one more player and we couldn't keep the ball, we exposed ourselves to the draw without any reason.

I understand that most of the players were açready thinking on the next game but Portugal should at least controlled the game away from the box, but what happened was Mexico playing in the Portuguese midfield asa well as they pleased and that shouldn't have happened.

About Holland I don't know if it's going to be that easy, but Portugal surely has a chance. I agree with on Miguel, he is probably one of the top 10 RB in the World, but I think he too was way "relaxed" on Mexico's game.
