2nd place? Would playing that formation mean we'd have 24 or more points right now? I really don't think so. We might have more wins than Atalanta though

What the match against Atalanta taught me, is that Ricky Alvarez damages our team more than anybody else does. He unbalances the team forward, he forces Hernanes to play a role that he's not adapted to (in front of the defense), and he takes away space from Kovacic.

Alvarez is always slow, cumbersome and useless with his misdirected passes. But he probably will be part of the starting eleven against Bologna, so it's gonna be a 3:1 win for us instead of a 6:0 win.

Would have been difficult to begin the season with Hernanes in our lineup while he was still on Lazio

rolando, ranocchia and juan jesus can perform in two variants:
zone defense or one-on-one defense. rolando and jesus gotta interrupt the actions of cristaldo and kone.

ranocchia is a so-called freeman who has to close the gaps of our defense and when we are in ball possession, he has to join our offensive.

it's a fact that the advantage of 3-5-2 is the superior number in midfield... usually. but bologna balances this with their 5-man midfield.

I mean, you can turn to 5-3-2 when you defend and turn to 3-5-2 / 3-4-3 when you attack but this requires a tremendous
flexibility and tactical maturity of the players.

that's just the way they place the names dude.

Hernanes and Alvarez are not DCM. In that diagram, the middle 5 are in a flat line across the middle. There just isn't room to print all the names on the same line.

Cambiasso will likely be the most defensive of the CMs. Although, Hernanes did play a very withdrawn (defensive) role against Livorno, and turned in our best MF performance of the match (yet again).

This is arguably our best back 3 configuration, especially in terms of looking towards next season (Samuel more likely to leave than Frog, but maybe both do).

In spite of my "battles" against the Kovacic fanboys, I do agree that he deserves a chance to start, at this point. Guarin has looked tired & uninspired lately, and that back-pass vs Livorno alone was prob worthy of a benching. (But good that Mazzarri made a point to defend him at practice this week)

As many noted after the Verona match, Hernanes and Kovacic in MF has given us some of our most effective (and entertaining) direct play this season.
