I can't remember who it was who said it, but I said something similar a few days ago about the City game, that even if we aren't likely to go to Manchester and win, that's immaterial to the mindset the team needs to have, including Inzaghi with his lineup choices. From a purely rational perspective, this is the most irrelevant game we'll play in the Champions League this season; it's not the game that's going to make-or-break us whether we finish top-8 and automatically advance, or finish in the top-16 (second leg home in play-off) whether we qualify for the play-off at all. If we find ourselves in any of those situations, we'll be looking at points we squandered in much more manageable circumstances, most surely. Nobody expects us to go to Manchester and win, anything from that game is a bonus in the table.
But just because that's how it looks from a numbers perspective is irrelevant. Top players want to play in the Champions League, the whole vibe of the competition is that it's the best against best and what better way to prove yourself than on that type of stage. Further, there is a chance we might see Man City again in the knockout stage potentially. Best way to get some understanding of how to play them is to actually play them (obviously this is a two-way street). City are probably the favorites to win this competition...so what? You don't run away and hide from a challenge then. The last team to win at Etihad in the Champions League was Lyon in the opening game of the 2018-'19 group stage...they met again in the COVID knockout stage in 2020, and Lyon beat them again there (not sure how many players were involved in both games for the French side). We all heard about the mental boost it gave to the club, even in defeat, at seeing how good they really are after giving City a run for their money and then some in the 2023 final - that Belgian who won't be named is the biggest reason it didn't get to extra time - so I'm sure a lot of the guys still around from that game would at least like a second crack at them even if the stakes are much smaller now.
Unless you're already eliminated or already clinched and locked into your position, rotation doesn't really exist in the CL. You put your best guys in the lineup and try and get results.
