Serie A Team of Week 16

After a wide-screen weekend of goals, near misses, joy and despair Dave Taylor picks his best XI from Week 16’s games.

Samir Ujkani [Palermo]

Restricted the League leaders to just the one goal, which he could do nothing about. Always alert especially when denying Leonardo Bonucci and Mirko Vucinic late on. ‘The Godfather.’

Stephan Lichtsteiner [Juventus]

Took control early on of the right flank and wouldn’t let go. His quick thinking picked up on Vucinic’s fabulous back heel and he slotted the ball home for the only goal. ‘Transformer.’

Juan Jesus [Inter]

Despite Napoli having most of the possession, the barnstorming Brazilian managed to keep a lid on Edison Cavani for much of the match. Won most of the aerial battles. ‘Ironman.’

Marquinhos [Roma]

Once again it’s hard to believe he is only 18. At the top of his game and absolutely solid and tenacious in every action. Even found time to score but was judged offside. ‘True Grit.’

Mattia De Sciglio [Milan]

Another superb performance from the youngster. His pace saw him set up Robinho’s goal for the opener and while always alert defensively, winning his aerial battles, he constantly menaced every time he moved up field. ‘Alien.’

Francesco Lodi [Catania]

Started off the game as he planned to go on, positively, with a thunderbolt of a strike that skinned the bar. From then in he controlled the midfield with everything positive going through him. ‘3:10 to Yuma.’

Vladimir Weiss [Pescara]

Did exactly what the top players do by delivering the ball with such sublimity that the recipient has no need to break his stride as he slots the ball home. Apart from everything else, he did this to perfection twice. ‘Easy Rider.’

Fredy Guarin [Inter]

The Colombian showed what he can do given the chance and scored with a sweet volley. It was also his fine assist for Diego Milito's goal that crowned a good evening’s work. ‘The Transporter.’

Gonzalo Bergessio [Catania]

Led the line perfectly throughout. First he set up Lucas Castro’s equaliser then slotted home the second from close-range before wrapping up the points with a decisive header. ‘Terminator.’

Francesco Totti [Roma]

What can you say? Incomparable? Scored twice and in reality had two assists, while also inspiring many other attempts. His seemingly nuclear-powered missile for the third goal from 35 metres out was beyond evaluation. ‘Dances with Wolves.’

Giampaolo Pazzini [Milan]

Uncompromising, especially in the second half. Scored with a clinical angled strike after winning the ball back, and also hit the woodwork and set up his teammates on several occasions. ‘Ben-Hur.’

Special mentions: German Denis [Atalanta], Lorenzo Insigne [Napoli], Miralem Pjanic [Roma], Antonio di Natale [Udinese], Danilo [Udinese], Panagiotis Tachtsidis [Roma] Stefano Sorrentino [Chievo], Zeljko Brkic [Udinese].

LoL, at the beginning there was a mistake, it was written, that Guarin gave an assist to Pazzini.
