My 2c..
Great game for FdB to review and analyze. For me, terrible overall performance but showed glaringly our weaknesses and strengths.
Imo, our root cause of all our issues is running; our players don't run enough and whoever is not on the ball (both offensively and defensively) ball watches and is not thinking about the next play or the next move and getting into position.
Offense:
(1) players are very static and don't support the man on the ball. The guy on the ball almost always receives, then puts his hands up motioning for somebody to be open. The only support is typically somebody behind the ball, not ahead of the ball.
(2) Support angles and distances are terrible. Unbelievable how basic shit we don't do as a team. Hardly any triangles formed to the man on the ball. Which goes back to the root cause which is that our players don't run enough. Support distance is also way too far, especially when we notice that the man who has the ball is under pressure. If somebody is getting closed down, back-to-goal, or multiple teamed, there needs to be at least 2 options that are close by. We maintain our very far spacing, which causes us to turn over the ball. Again, fix our running and this will be solved.
Defense
(1) Defensive transition is horrible. Again, we lose the ball and the players ahead of the ball are walking back instead of tracking back or at least, tracking the nearest opponent, who is transitioning to offense. Also tactically, on transition players aren't pressing the man on the ball to prevent passing options for the attacking team.
(2) Defensive spacing is terrible. Distance between the lines are terrible. Too many times Celtic players can get between our lines, receive, and turn. Probably 15-20ft between the defensive line and midfield line.
Our only good thing is the quality of our players individually. And that's a huge plus. But there's a TON of team work that needs to be done. TON. I don't expect to see any material difference til at least after winter break.
Good luck FdB.
Also, very, very interesting to see him try a 4-4-2 flat. Maybe there's hope (for me) after all if he can make that work.
