THIS IS THE REAL TEST

Europa League serial winners Sevilla are seeking a record sixth trophy, but Owen Diana identifies the strengths and weaknesses Inter must watch out for.

Inter’s progress in Germany has reignited a long-lost love affair with a competition they cherished back in the 1990s. In order to truly rekindle that romance, they must dethrone the modern-day kings of the Europa League. Sevilla are one of the continent’s top teams and are in sparkling form heading into Friday’s showdown. The Nerazzurri must be at their best if they hope to defeat them.

The past 15 years have been full of glorious European nights for Los Hispalenses. Their five Europa League/UEFA Cup titles, a tournament record, have all come in the last decade and a half. That includes an incredible hat-trick in 2014, 2015 and 2016. They have never lost a final in their favourite competition, and that glorious history should spur them on. Furthermore, the experience of key players Jesús Navas and Éver Banega, who each have two winner’s medals from those past successes, could prove invaluable.

Ex-Inter man Banega will be contesting his last match with the Andalusians before completing a move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab. The Argentinean maestro moved to Italy in July 2016, but was back in Spain less than a year later after failing to hit the heights during his 33 appearances in all competitions. He has always shone for Sevilla, however, and has been a crucial cog in their run to Cologne.

The veteran schemer will not be the only familiar face to followers of Italian football. The two wide forward positions in Julen Lopetegui’s 4-3-3 are reserved for ex-Milanisti Suso and Lucas Ocampos, while former Palermo creator Franco ‘Mudo’ Vázquez could make an impact off the bench. The Serie A connection even extends into the director’s box, where Monchi has rehabbed his reputation after a mixed spell at Roma.

Centre-backs Diego Carlos and Jules Koundé were two excellent pieces of business last summer, while fellow newcomer Ocampos struck 14 times in La Liga. Sevilla love to attack down the wings, where full-backs Sergio Reguilón and the aforementioned Navas are instructed to advance upfield at every opportunity.

Los Hispalenses often control possession and territory, but such an aggressive strategy comes with inherent risks. They are susceptible to the counter-attack, as was seen in the recent triumphs over Wolves and Manchester United. Antonio Conte’s charges are likely to sit off and wait for opportunities on the break, where the quality of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martínez could make the difference.

For all their talent, Sevilla do not possess a Number 9 who can compete with either member of Inter’s lethal strike partnership. Likely starter Youssef En-Nesyri scored eight league goals, while Luuk de Jong found the back of the net on six occasions. Neither should inspire fear in an Inter backline that was Italy’s best in 2019-20.

With Sevilla set to take the game to their more illustrious opponent, Friday’s final will hinge on how Inter cope defensively. If they can repel the waves of Spanish pressure, the Nerazzurri should find joy from balls into space.

The Europa League has never seen success like Sevilla’s, but the Andalusians have never faced a team of Inter’s level at this decisive stage, either. A serial winner like Conte will not be cowed by those five trophies, and he will transmit that conviction to his troops. It won’t be easy, but the Nerazzurri have every chance of ending a decade of disappointment with some silverware.

FORZA INTER !!!!!!

Lack of fans kills the buzz.

Edit, just googled, gdansk Poland. What a shame. Would have been amazing to get over to it

Inter 0-2 Sevilla.

Penalty for them in the first half (VAR handball ruling) and another goal on a counter around the 80th minute mark.

Hi shendm,

I visited your forum and know you linked this so you can see this. God you are clueless. Lol we've scored the most goals of any inter season so I wouldn't say we will park the bus. And no, eriksen isn't playing because he's been shit. When we came back from lockdown conte changed the formation and he started like 3-4 games in a row and was shit and dropped.
Also, man united missed 30 chances against your team and you scored with about your second attack in the half.
Anyway, see you later boi. May the best team win.

Sevilla is playing in the EPL and is an English team?

If not, well, frankly, I don't understand his arrogance, normally fans of English teams act and write in such a way.

Yeah, the forum is called monchis men which is incredibly embarrassing. Is monchi a club legend? Hes a legend in Italy as well for being the worst sporting director a club has possibly seen and ruining Roma.

Anyway, I'm being petty and I shouldn't . I respect sevilla, they are great in this competition though I don't know much about them this season but I have a strange confidence in our team at the minute and I think if we turn up, we win. Anyway, let's hope for a good game and a win.

Good afternoon gentlemen. I hope everyone is well and looking forward to this evenings game? I didn't even know about this forum until Shend pointed out you had been quoting his posts.

My name is Jim, I'm from Surrey in England and it just so happens that I am a fan of both Internazionale and Sevilla, so not sure whether that makes tonight's game a good thing, or extremely awkward. 

Anyway, the lads over on Monchi's Men mean well, they are just extremely passionate about the team, and excited for tonight's game, as am I naturally. I've tended to try and avoid the convos about Inter players as I know how good our team is, I guess it is funny seeing how fans of other clubs tend to view other teams players.

Forza Inter!

Yeah, the forum is called monchis men which is incredibly embarrassing. Is monchi a club legend? .

Not sure if this is a genuine question or a piss take? Monchi as a player certainly not a legend, but he retired in his Early 30s, and became the clubs sporting director, completely overhauling how the club scouted players, and ran the youth setup to built one of the most dynamic and impressive structures not just in European but World football.

Buy players struggling, build them up, get them playing to their full potential and then selling them on for a profit. Bring through youth products for next to nothing, sell on for huge profit.

So as much as a non player can be, yes he is pretty much a legend, regardless of what went on at Roma (almost 20 years of success based on his model at Sevilla compared to 18 months of crap at Roma - You tell me whether the problem was Monchi or the club? Especially given Sevilla have suddenly gotten a lot better this season since he has come back). But then I'm sure you could have figured all that out for yourself if you actually bothered to do a bit of research. ;)

I should stop but I can't help but read more of his posts.

"shakter feared inter too much without reason"... The reason was we could put goals past them at will. They lost 5 fucking nil. Jesus, this guy

I'd say he did good with Roma too, just with Sevilla it was a bigger jump in quality? Welcome, mr. Jim, hopefully you become a more frequent user.

It's a genuine question. I don't have time to sit and research monchi at the minute but thanks for the context. Honestly I just knew people raved about him and only really followed him at Roma which was a disaster.

Welcome to the forum dude.

Welcome to the forum dude.

Then that is fair enough, and I'm glad I have given you an idea. When I first got into Spanish football in the mid to late 90s, well after Italian football, Sevilla were very much what is classed in football as a yo yo club.

Win the Second Division easily, then go straight back down, usually embarrassingly in last place. The club directors decided things needed to change as the model of spending bundles of cash on crap just wasn't working.

Not sure exactly how Monchi got into the role, but the model he uses is absolutely crazy. If I can find the article put out last year it goes in to how many scouts he has around the World, who feed back to his team in Seville. Usually his team draw up a list of say... We need a Right Back and then produce a list of 10 players based on suitability due to age, transfer market value, how they are performing for their clubs etc.

Obviously I'm not really doing it justice but it's quite remarkable how much success the whole model he has built from the ground up has brought to Sevilla. I liken it really to what Atalanta are doing these days actually.

I just stole this from Wikipedia as a quick condensed version of his work. Also wanted to point out he retired from playing in 1999 at 31 years old.

"In 2000, after Sevilla were relegated from the top division, Monchi was appointed their director of football.[3] He was given two objectives by the board: develop the club's youth system and implement a vast scouting policy inside and outside Spain.

Monchi helped discover Diego Capel, Alberto Moreno, Jesús Navas, Antonio Puerta, Sergio Ramos and José Antonio Reyes,[4] and he also created a network of over 700 scouts around the world. Within this setup, he sourced a number of profitable bargains (including Adriano, Dani Alves, Júlio Baptista, Federico Fazio, Seydou Keita and Ivan Rakitić),[5] making a profit of around €200 million in the transfer market, as the club established itself in the top half of the top division in his 16 years there.[6]"
