Damn, didn't see the game... what the hell happened? Was Russia actually good or did Italy just get it all wrong?

Felt like Italy was in control basically up until Russia scored their first goal, and by far had more chances up until then. Russia's first came just after Italy couldn't capitalize (again) on a counter. After that the first team was subbed off, and it just fell apart

I havent watched Italy´s national team games lately but this is probably the worst line up I have seen.

Italy: Buffon (De Sanctis 46); Maggio, Barzagli, Bonucci, Balzaretti (Ogbonna 53); De Rossi (Thiago Motta 60), Pirlo (Giovinco 68), Marchisio; Montolivo (Nocerino 60); Cassano (Di Natale 68), Balotelli

I think Prandelli has lost it if he really going to play Italy this way. Mario and Cassano to be counted on scoring:palm:. You never know how these two will play. And Barzagli and Bonucci. They have now probably realised how tough is to play against opponents who can really hurt you. The season what they had in Jube was just like a big bubble where everything went well. Montolivo as trequartista. Has he ever full filled the potential that expected.

I was actually impressed with our passing game to be honest.

Yeah we have some defensive issues but the return of Chiellini will help.

Cassano just looks unfit and I would prefer to see him come off the bench as a super sub. Giovinco and Balotelli should be the starting strikers IMO.

Montilivio... Jesus Christ. How is this guy still in the national team? I didn't see a lot of Fiorentina this past season but everytime I watch him play for the Azzurri, he is just average.

Even though the result was terrible, I thought Italia as a whole has a lot of potential.

The passing and possession was impressive, and they did a great job creating chances, they just couldn't finish. Montolivo at trequartista is just :palm:. I honestly think this squad can go far in Euros, but they can't spoil this many chances.

Cassano didn't look great either. I think you're right in saying a Giovinco - Balotelli partnership would work with Cassano as the super sub and Di Natale on standby.

Italy didn't play too bad at all. They created a lot more chances, but just couldn't finish. Cassano missed quite a few chances and I thought Balotelli played well and deserved a goal. Montolivo was pretty much a fail again, and the defense was terrible late in the 2nd half. Maggio was truly rubbish last night, 2nd and 3rd goals were mostly his fault, especially the miscommunication with De Sanctis on the 2nd.

Prandelli: 'I'll change Italy defence'

Cesare Prandelli admits he was “surprised” by the extent of Italy’s defeat to Russia and will take action. “We’ll change the defence and start from scratch.”

The Coach had tried to be reassuring after the 3-0 friendly loss in Zurich on Friday evening, but after 24 hours confessed it was a heavy blow.

“It’s better to suffer a defeat that puts our feet back on the ground. Russia are ready for Euro 2012, but we are not. We haven’t got much time and will use it to be prepared for June 10 against Spain,” said Prandelli.

The failure of the 4-3-1-2 system has led many to suggest Italy switch to a 3-5-2 in the style of Juventus.

“You could see the fragility of the team when we went behind and I was surprised by the defence. I am forced to try something, even if I haven’t got much time, to give some security at the back.

“It’s true we only conceded two goals in qualifying, but that was eight months ago. Now we have to work with what the lads know.

“I realise it’s difficult to find something positive to say when you lose 3-0, but in the first half we held out well against a very physical side that is ahead of us in terms of fitness.

“In the first 12 minutes of the second half we also took the initiative and had a great chance to take the lead.

“After conceding the opener, it was as if we collapsed. We’ve got to figure out if this is a psychological or physical issue. When Russia had the ball wide, we were under serious pressure.

“Obviously all the players were upset, but we all said it was better to lose in a friendly so we could begin again. Some suggested we were even favourites, but we need to get back to fighting for every ball. That’s what we said to each other in the locker room: wipe the slate clean and start from scratch.

“I had the complete squad at my disposal for only four days and in eight months this was the second game we’d played.”

On top of these problems, Prandelli and his squad have also had to deal with the betting scandal and a dawn police raid on the Coverciano training ground to serve Domenico Criscito with a notice of investigation.

“How difficult is it to play with the atmosphere around the Nazionale? It’s difficult, but you’ll see that soon Italy will be talked about only for its football.”

Gasp backs 3-5-2 Italy

Cesare Prandelli hinted he’d switch to a 3-5-2 system against Spain and Gian Piero Gasperini agrees “many of the Azzurri come from clubs with three-man defences.”

The Italy Coach confessed he would have to “change the defence” after a disastrous 3-0 defeat to Russia in their only pre-tournament friendly.

It would be moulded on the Scudetto-winning Juventus side, especially as the back line would be a Bianconeri bloc of Gigi Buffon, Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.

Christian Maggio and Federico Balzaretti – or another Juve star, Emanuele Giaccherini – therefore move up to the wings where they are allowed to pour forward.

The midfield would remain intact with Daniele De Rossi, Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio, dropping Riccardo Montolivo.

Mario Balotelli retains his spot in attack, but Antonio Di Natale could potentially push past Antonio Cassano in the pecking order.

“I don’t see it being such a difficult transition,” insisted ex-Inter Coach Gasperini in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Prandelli has at his disposal the best of our football, which means players who are tactically evolved and have experience of all systems.

“I tend to split players up into those who are talented and less talented. The talented ones know how to do everything.

“Besides, many of the Azzurri come from clubs with three-man defences and these are also the teams that brought home the silverware. Just look at Juventus and Napoli, but also Udinese and Parma have been really impressive.

“In my view the change would not be as traumatic as some suggest. Italy have barely played together this year, so it’s not as if they are locked into a tactical philosophy.”

Barzagli and Bonucci have easily been the best Italian center backs this season. With Chiellini out for this match, who exactly would you start over them?

When the coach plays other forwards everyone cries that Balotelli and Cassano should play, but when they start, everyone says they are too inconsistent. I thought the lineup he chose was fine, we created a million chances just couldn't finish and got countered on with our defense looking a lot like Inter's this past year :palm:

Barzagli was by far the best italan defender, but Bonucci? Come on... They IS improved since last season which can be expected, but he was far from one of the best in Italy.

Fuck... Andrea Barzagli out potentially for 20 days, a strain to his calf. Big blow for Italy.

Damn, that's a huge loss for Italian NT.

I would have rather see Bonucci out and Rano in.

Baz was one of the best defenders in SerieA this season... What a loss :palm:

I do hope to see Rannocchia though... At least some Inter representation.

Ffs i was gonna bet some $ on italy winning euros, but ever since last week things are just going downhill. Criscito out, chielini gonna play first game after injury w spain, barzagli damaged. So pissed off. Spain has huge problems in attack and defence, germany is too inexperienced, apart from klose their oldest players are in mid 20s. Italy seemed like best choice but now not so much with bonucci starting as cb.

Balotelli apparrently is ok.

Prandelli has been trying out De Rossi at CB in training.

3 man defense could be coming...

Astori is on stand-by now, and not Rano. Criscito wants to be back in the team as well, as he "was made a promise".
