I think it is a fool's game (but a fun one) to compare players from different generations, since the game is entirely different, hence the tactics, coaches' wants etc. shape players differently.
Oh yeah forgot to mention Aguero and Suarez. Contrary to the striker in current era, i think current/post 2010 wingers or wide forwards are superior to the 00's wingers. Maybe Giggs was the only good one. Robben, Prime Ronaldo, Salah and Bale are more superior to the likes Pires, Beckham, Figo, Camoranesi lol. Yeah football has been evolved so much.
But "Robben, Prime Ronaldo, Salah and Bale" have way less defense and build up duties/abilities ( i know Bale was a SB before, but still he sucks at it), like you can play the later in a 4-4-1-1 setting, but not the former, and you can kinda play them both in a 4-3-3 setting (maybe Beckham shift to the middle.), which "Robben, Prime Ronaldo, Salah and Bale" is superior in 4-3-3 subject to formation or playstyle , however, it is stupid to do a linear comparison, since they would suck balls in 4-4-2.
About Vieri...
First, I don't think being technically superior is ever a requirement for top strikers, I think Ibra, Henry and Fat Ronaldo etc. made everyone misunderstand that.
Even Haaland is not very technical.
Whether Vieri can survive in today's game, I think you just have to look at Icardi for the answer, which also explains why there is a lack of top strikers in modern era.
Teams basically just don't want to play with a pure striker, you want something like Benzema or Toro, which also the reason why I think how big of a beast Lautaro is, normally the more ground covered/work rate from the striker, the lower the conversion rate it will be, but it doesn't affect him much, not to mention his technic is up there, he is as complete as you can get, of course he is still improving everything.
..so ... even "Bobo will score for us", if we took him as of who he was, he or his team might struggle in modern football, but if he was born later and adjust to all the different training and tactics he would be still a very very top striker.
For me, I think Batistuta is the best striker ever though, and he is not "very technical" whatever that means, I missed at least half of his prime time though, but still I wondered back then if the Gk touches his penalty shot, will it break their bones LOL.
As for Materazzi, he is very good technical wise, glad Brehme1989 pointed it out, like have you guys seen his freekicks and long ball accuracy too? Not to mention his bicycle kick goal with us. Bonus one is the own goal before the world cup LOL so pin point.
You may not remember or didn't follow at the time, but Zidane was considered very inconsistent and only cemented himself as the most important player and the team's leader in the 2003-4 season which ended in catastrophy. It's not like Real Madrid was steamrolling everyone just because they had the world's best players.
Quite misleading, since you pin that one on Zidane it was more of the departures of Makélélé and Hierro, but it was a fucking disaster for them.
P.S. Normally bad boys are kinda cool and bad ass (e.g. Cantona, Cassano etc.) , but for some reason I always felt like Joey Barton was just a laugh stock LOL.
