DUBAI - Luis Figo spoke to the press in a news conference following this morning's training session at the Al-Wasl Stadium.
"I'm feeling better, my fibula has healed, and there's just a small muscular irritation because I have gone a long time without running or doing the work I usually do," said the Portuguese star about his return to competitive action after the bad injury sustained in last November's match against Juventus.
"I want to return as soon as possible and make the best finish to the season."
According to newspaper rumours of recent days, Figo is set for a spell in the American league. "I don't like talking about suppositions. I'm not considering this possibility at the moment because I have other things on my mind," he said. "I have to get fit, play these last six months and do my best in these last months in Italian football. After that we will see what happens."
Precisely twelve months ago Figo had the chance to play in Saudi Arabia. "There was a deal but unfortunately it didn't turn out to be serious," he explained. "I had a bad experience with that situation and for me the doors are closed in this part of the world."
After three days of training at the Al-Wasl Stadium, the Nerazzurri will face Ajax in their first match of the Dubai Cup. Figo: "I think this tournament is a great opportunity for the people here to see big teams. They're probably not used to watching these games live. It shows that Dubai is developing, not only in terms of buildings and social life, but also sports and football."
Asked to comment on the possible arrival at Inter of his compatriot Maniche, Figo replied: "He's a player I know, and his characteristics are those of a team player. He's the type of player every team wants because he's useful and he has quality. Does he have a fiery temper? I have never had any problems with him in the national team. He had a bad experience in Russia, where he didn't adapt well, but this doesn't mean he's an argumentative player. I think it's good to have personality. It means you have the character to play well."
Figo concluded with a few words about Inter's goals for the season. He said. "The team has done well in the last year. We are continuing the good job we did last season and our objective is to be champions again. Right now we're strong, but we have to continue to work with the same ideas because we are just halfway through the season.
"Our chances in Europe? I think we have the same chance as the other teams. There are always big teams in Europe and they play in a different way. It's not easy because there are a lot of strong teams in Europe who have the same objective as us, but we have to beat them."
