If you're going back to Baggio days, then you have to include players like Dejan Savicevic and Michael Laudrup there. As well as Totti if you're going to add Figo there.

Ronaldo is heads & shoulders above all these guys.

From 1990 and on, #2 is a lock for Roberto Baggio with #3 being contended by Messi and Ronaldinho whereas I consider Totti and Zidane to be of similar talent to each other for that #5 spot, just a different brand. Totti has a greater ball distribution range (be it about passing, crossing or shooting) and is miles more creative whereas Zidane has sticky feet where it's just too darn hard to make him lose the ball and much more smooth dribbling elegance.

The only other contemporary player that has a chance of being included in such a list would be Zlatan but personally I wouldn't include him in a top 10 list since 1990. I also hold Recoba highly for these kind of lists as well as Hagi, Stoichkov and Prosinecki followed by the rest of the Balkan clan (Stojkovic, Boban etc). Cristiano Ronaldo is surely a talented player but I think his athletic and mental ability is what separates him from the rest and puts him closer to Messi than closer to the next guy. But it's not just a 'talent' thing because then Denilson, Quaresma, Djalminha and Cassano would have been included and their career doesn't really help their cause, as it does not give merit to Recoba either.

The only ones that felt unique are Messi, Cristiano and Zlatan. And possibly Alexis Sanchez. Most of the rest of the top players in the last 10 years feel like there's a very similar player or even more from older periods that were as good or better or maybe in some cases slightly inferior. But those guys were usually overshadowed by some legends that don't get much appreciation as they'd get if they played today.

The number of players who make you go wow is on a steady decline as time goes in this sport. And that's what this is pretty much about. Anyone can prefer someone over another, but anyone who's seen or at least is well versed in the sport can understand that individual talent has diminished over the years, a concern that football fans had since the late 70s where this was first addressed as an issue.

I guess Mourinho agrees with some of us here

The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, Inter and Chelsea boss considers former Brazil striker Ronaldo to be the finest player he has ever seen. “Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi have had longer careers, they have remained at the top every day for 15 years,” Mourinho told LiveScore.
“However, if we are talking strictly about talent and skill, nobody surpasses Ronaldo [Nazario].

The likes of Argentine superstar Messi and Portuguese forward Ronaldo have gone on to top those numbers, while breaking countless scoring records with their incredible feats.

Mourinho, though, clearly feels that the Brazilian phenomenon deserves top billing because he was untouchable at times in an era where it was harder to deliver such talismanic showings.

From Linea Inter last night:
🎙️ Ronaldo: “La mia Inter?

Ronaldo at the last paragraph pretty much confirms that the only reason he left was because Cuper was still around.

So how about translating it, then posting it ?

If this is all about 'Ronaldo leaving cos Cuper was still around', then that's about as earth-shattering as water has been found to be wet.

Geez.. Is it so hard to google something?

This is from Football Italia

Ronaldo reveals he “never wanted to leave Inter,” but felt forced to walk away when the club backed Hector Cuper after their Scudetto collapse.

“That Inter was a fantastic team. Along with Bobo Vieri, we had Clarence Seedorf and many other talents. Unfortunately, the injuries prevented me from sharing the field with Vieri that many times,” Ronaldo said via videolink in the Festival dello Sport.

“When I first arrived, there was such great enthusiasm at Inter and the fans believed we could achieve wonderful results. I see enthusiasm around Inter this year too and hope we can win something.”

Ronaldo suffered a series of knee injuries in his career, none more painful than the rupture of a tendon just minutes into his comeback during a Coppa Italia game against Lazio.

“I immediately realised that the knee had buckled. I had to hold my knee in place, as it was sliding towards the thigh. It was an injury that had never really happened in football before and there wasn’t much information, so the first 10 days were total darkness and sadness. I had to find within myself all the love for football, love I didn’t even know I had.

“I never let go for a day during that physiotherapy and always hoped I could get back on the pitch. I do feel that the training exercises I was given before that did not help the situation.”

Ronaldo did return and was about to take Inter to the long-awaited Scudetto on May 5, 2002, but a 4-2 defeat at Lazio saw Juventus leapfrog them to win the title on the last day.

“I thought about that many times. I think we went out there too convinced that we’d win. I also believe Cuper got the wrong line-up, putting one too many players in midfield.

“There were some individual errors in there too. It was one of the biggest disappointments of my entire life.”

A couple of months later, Ronaldo completed a transfer to Real Madrid.

“I never wanted to leave Inter, as I felt that was my home and would be for life. I’d never gone to a President to demand they fire the Coach, as that didn’t seem right and it wasn’t my style.

“However, we reached a point with Cuper where I simply couldn’t do anything else. He did not treat me well at all. I don’t know if winning the Scudetto would’ve changed my mind.

“I was convinced Massimo Moratti would sack Cuper, so it was a nasty surprise for me when he backed the Coach. At that moment, as I was too proud, I decided to walk away.

“The city that had first loved me, now hated me. I needed police protection. It was tough. I adore Moratti, he was like a father to me. We reached a conclusion to that relationship where both of us made a mistake.”

Adding insult to injury, Moratti did eventually fire Cuper in October 2003.

Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima scored 88 goals by taking the ball around the goalkeeper during his career. That is 21% of his career goals scored by beating the goalkeeper. Truly remarkable.
