Pretty sure we just witnessed two out-of-the-box goals two days ago. But in general, it does increase the chance of MF scoring if he gets in the box.

That can only happen if shooting opportunities arise. It's a pre season game a team that doesn't play like the majority of our opposition so I wouldn't really put much into it. It was a welcome change of course, I hate the "walk to the goal" mentality that Dutch football brought to what we call 'modern football'.

If you want your MCs to score they need to enter the box.

Barella doesn't do it that much, Brozovic rarely does it as of late but a change of role may see it happen, Sensi doesn't do it. You are left with Gagliardini and Vecino to step foot into the box.
Nainggolan is the only one who could excel in this role from existing midfielders and he was "out of plans" from day 1.

Pirlo mostly scored from distance, Pogba was a mix and Juventus had Vidal who excelled at this. Marchisio also did it quite a lot and Brozovic could potentially get into that role but he needs to improve dribbling and shooting for that to happen.

Surely Barella enters the box more than Gagliardini. He's shown that at club and international level. Sensi does quite regularly as well. Gagliardini gets in the box, but lacks grit in front of goal and that's always been a weak spot in his game.

He can pull it off, but it's not his style. He did it with Cagliari occasionally as well. He needs to become more dangerous in the box basically.

^ IMO this is correct and applies to not only Barella but Brozovic and Sensi as well.

Brozovic has 20 goals + 19 assists in 154 apps in all comps. If you look at those goals, you can see there's a relatively cultured player there who can score from distance from time to time or finish a chance from time to time. But as brehme says, it's not his style to do it any more than he is currently doing. Brozovic can go entire matches without attempting a single shot. That's fine. Despite his character, he's a pretty intelligent player so let him attack when he sees fit because he can pull it off from time to time. However, try to change him, get him to shoot more and attack more and I believe you'll pull him from his comfort zone into a role where he won't succeed.

Barella isn't much better tbh. He scored one goal last season - a cross deflected into the net. The season before that he scored 6 goals. 3 of those were penalties, 1 was a deflection which wasn't even on target, 1 was a howler by Donnarumma. Only one was any kind of good finish from open play. I haven't watched Barella as much as some of you but I've never, ever got the impression he's a particularly potent goal threat whatsoever.

As others have identified, the only natural goalscorer we have in midfield is Nainggolan - and he seems persona non grata anyway. Vecino has scored a few nice goals, all from about 1m away from the net. Gagliardini lacks composure in front of goal. I won't even dignify Joao Mario and Valero with a mention because those two wouldn't be a goal threat if they were playing against children in wheelchairs.

As it stands, I don't expect anyone in midfield to contribute very much to our goal tally. They can all score from time to time, but it's simply not in their DNA to play this way consistently and with high quality. We simply don't have a Lampard/Hamsik/Vidal type player to make late runs into the box and finish chances etc. Nor do I believe any of our current midfielders can be converted to play that role at a high level. This is a problem, and it's why I've wanted a goal scoring CM for several seasons now. Nainggolan was supposed to be that guy but he was either over the hill, or injured and now unwanted by Conte.

I'm using the evidence of what we've seen from these players to discern what kind of potential and skills they possess. And as far as I'm concerned, our current midfield (minus Nainggolan) does not even come close to juve's 2011-14 midfield in terms of attacking. You can not compare this side with Conte's juve.

Agreed. Thats why I'm hoping Conte can give Nainggolan a chance. If we let 9G go, we will need a top replacement - someone like SMS. I doubt we have the budget for that.

Re Barella, I think he can develop into that kind of a player in the future, what SMS is now and 9G used to be. But he is not there now. I wouldn't expect anything more than the odd goal from him. Barella clearly idolises 9G, which is another reason to keep the Ninja as a mentor to develop the kid's end product.

All depends on the player's role within the team or what the coach wants him to do tactically. Check him out against Greece...got into the box several times:

Exactly i saw him with Italy NT couple of times and with the U21 this summer and there 2 completely different barellas.
With Mancini the game was flowing through Veratti and Jorginho while Barella was only doing runs to the box while with the u21 he was playing in the back distributing the ball around and was almost never dangerous in the opposition area.

So what if our midfielders can't score?

We have Godin, De Vrij, and Skriniar out there.

Yeah didn't he score 2 in 3 games for Italy?

and what about Nocerino? A defensive midfielder who in Allegri's Milan was scored 10 goals in one season. It depends on the team you play with.

It took us two years to find Brozo's position we shouldn't be changing his role.

Can't wait to see the amount of running this guy puts in this season under Conte.

I'm waiting to see how Conte deals with all his hand-flailing when he fucks up and loses the ball.

That was usually due to months of frustration at his colleagues making amateur mistakes though which should subside.

We haven’t seen Sensi play in front of the defense yet this preseason. Interested to see how he can deputize Brozovic

Because that’s probably not part of Conte’s plan, yet.

Ya, I really can't stand that crap. I had a group of older players who reacted like this a lot. When there are no sub restrictions, you can tell them to take a seat and chill out so that is helpful...here it is much harder. I really hate it...how does that help anyone who made a mistake?

Is anybody else worried that we are going into another season where we will be heavily reliant on Brozo? It remains to be seen how Sensi will deputize there.

Is there a better sub than Sensi for him? We haven't had a midfielder so good as Sensi for awhile (apart from Brozo) in terms of passing in the midfield. Might be a bit different type but with Barella I think they're fine.

We don’t necessarily have to stick to the single pivot midfield when Brozovic is out. Right now I can’t see Conte sacrificing the offensive passes that Sensi provide just to fill in for Brozovic.

Unless we get another attacking minded central midfielder.
