A lot of people complain about Brozovic, especially when he has an off day or a mental moment. But who exactly would you replace him with who is either compatible with, or improves our system? A 20 year old Tonali? Locatelli? Fucking Bennacer? Ndombele?
Replacing Brozovic for a high-level defensive lynchpin like Kante or a Fabinho-type player is not a bad idea in theory. But for what you might gain in defensive security, you'd lose so much in the absence of Brozovic's playmaking abilities.
If you consider like-for-like players, there honestly aren't that many better players. Veratti? Jorginho? De Jong? Thiago? Have you seen how much these guys would cost?
Once you decide to upgrade on Brozovic, you have 3 choices:
1) pay obscene money for the De Jong's of the world
2) buy a more defensive player like Fabinho and change system
3) unearth some hidden young talent, patiently develop him and hope he reaches a higher level
Brozovic is certainly limited and flawed in some ways. And there are questions over his temperament and mentality. But I think a lot of people don't realise that there really isn't many players out there better than him in his role. This isn't Gagliardini we're talking about where anyone can easily name 40 better midfielders.
