Dunno bro. Shell is up like 2x over a time Saras has been flat. They pay stupid high dividends too - capital that could have been reinvested in the business. Currently over 10% yield.
Maybe in that business the size matters and it's not easy to reinvest if you're not big enough. Shell is 100x bigger company market cap wise.

Kinda the other way around tbh. Once you're above some minimum size it's easier to find opportunity and grow for smaller more nimble companies provided you have enough capital

In this instance, that's a hard no.

Please do mention any similar size examples from the European Oil refinirery industry that grew in this period, that weren't directly backed by government or had some sort of dodgy arrangement (aka like the Greek ones)

In the meantime. Eni, Tamoil, Total and smaller player IES have closed some or most of their operations in Italy.
