That midfield would be the best in serie a and is virtually unattainable. Kovacic/sensi/radja coming off the bench we would destroy everyone.

I like SMS a lot, but that would still mean we don't have a designated free kick taker. Is that why we wanted to buy Kolarov? :D

Bad news for those who wanted Kovacic back at Inter. According to Sky, Chelsea will sign him permanently for 50m.

For 50M Euro they can have him. Yeesh, I like me some Kova but I can't imagine he's worth that price but, well, I'm not gonna tell Chelsea how to spend their money.

Not sure how he'll be registered for competition next season given the transfer embargo, though. Is there a work-around if they sign him before July 1 and, technically, he never leaves their books?

If he didn't have a short stint at Inter almost no one here would want him; definitely not for that price.

According to cfans, Kovacic is likely the only player they can sign because of the ban (and Higuain lul). So they just have to.

A mature Kova would be Serie A's best midfielder. He is perfect for it.

Really upset we couldn't get him.

I disagree on that. Also, how long would we wait for him to be mature? It's not as if he's that young. Fabian Ruiz is younger and currently a better player. Also, it would take him quite some time to be at Pjanic's level.

Depends what maturity means, if it’s taking the current set of skills increasing it slightly and reducing the amount of mistakes, then it’s insufficient.

If it’s expanding on a set of skill set that is not part of his current skill set, then maybe.

They have transfer ban and they can only sign Kovacic as he was already registered as Chelsea player last season.

Going by how he played it's a poor deal for Chelsea. He lost his place to Loftus Cheek and Chelsea have some good midfield talents.

Really upset we couldn't get him.

With the exception of the old guard, Yung Kova was easily my favorite r̶a̶p̶p̶e̶r̶ player during our banter years but he wasn't mature then and IMO still hasn't matured.

There is a total of approx. 3,420 possible league minutes per season. Since leaving Inter, Kovacic has played just 5,450 total league minutes of a possible 13,700 minutes over 4 seasons. That's an average of just 1,360 league minutes per season in the past 4 years. In fact, the last time he even played over 2,500 minutes i.e. 3 quarters of a season, it was here at Inter in 2014/15, literally 5 years ago.

I don't think that's enough game time to develop to ones full potential. Especially in that crucial foundation age and in a role as cerebral as Kovacic's.

Of course hindsight is always 20/20. We were never going to win shit in the banter era anyway. Our club was in a complete mess, restricted financially and wasting what little money we had on mediocre players like Medel and Kondogbia. I blame the management for not having the foresight to better manage our rebuilding phase and instead going for the quick fix every year, and imploding as a result. Even if he wasn't "ready", Kovacic should've developed here. He should've been trusted as a key foundation stone of our rebuilding phase but instead we sold him off looking for another (failed) shortcut back to the top.

Ironically, it's actually Brozovic who very loosely "succeeded" to fulfill this destiny to some extent  Like Kovacic, Brozovic was bought for cheap during the banter years as a young player with potential. Despite his enormous ups and downs, with some luck, he managed to develop into a very good midfielder and emerge from the banter era a truly important player in our top 4 and CL squad. It wasn't pretty, but we/he made it happen. This is what I wanted for Kovacic - grow through the dark years and come out the fire as a developed key player.

Regardless though, Kovacic sitting on the bench for literally 60% of the season, for four consecutive seasons has severely stunted his development. I think this is plain to see when you watch him play. He looks every bit as naive as he was when he was a 20 year old at Inter. It's sad, and yea, we made mistakes but it is what it is. I don't think he's worth bringing back and I think the idea of Chelsea buying him out for €50m is laughable.

The question is what will he add? I don't think Kova has ever found his actual role, and with Sensi and Brozo playing the regista role I don't see any space for him.

Yeah would have to agree with you and the majority here. 50 mil is a ridiculous price tag and had he not illusively dazzled us in his youth we wouldn't even consider something of the sort. With Barella + Sensi on loan for the first season we keep the books tight and the future opportunistic. There was no need for this transfer and one must start to think its all BS that linked him even remotely close to a move back here.

Then it makes more sense to overpay for him. They cannot sign anyone else, they lost Hazard and maybe will sell other players as well. They need the roster.

Correct also it’s not like the Hazard sale carries over in terms of FFP so they need to spend that capital gain now in the only way they can to improve the team. Or at least not go backwards.
