I'm shocked by post-WC break Darmian. He looks unplayable, with yesterday being the culmination of this form he's in.

I don’t know about unplayable but he has indeed been very good. He’s just very well rounded and drilled in the fundamentals with a good head on his shoulders. He’s not exceptional in any particularly area, but does everything well enough: he’s not fast but he’s not slow, his technique isn’t WC but it’s solid, he’s not physically intimidating but he can hold his own. I admire him and hope he can keep this good spell of form going.

I wouldn't overhype him though. But he's a useful member of the squad. Worst case scenario, he could even be our LCB for 15-20 mins. The versatility alone would guarantee him minutes, which translates into match fitness. For me, that's enough.

When we were signing this guy I was thinking that we are getting new Ezequiel Schelotto, and we are going back to the era of bringing used mediocre players like Gargano, Mudingayi etc.

But now. This guy is worth every € we put into him. He isn't a big name. He isn't a player that you will enjoy watching, he isn't one of the best in his position. But he is fkn useful, he is reliable and he serves us well.

If he had arrived as a permanent starter this thread wouldn't be as kind to him.

His role is exactly what we need from Gagliardini and Correa, and they cannot deliver it.

We needed more from Correa considering the price paid and his salary. Iirc we paid good money for Gags too (around 20 million). So they needed to contribute more than Darmian does but they contribute less.

Not exactly.

He was brought to fill up a roster spot. The others were brought to be important team players. They failed their expectations so they got demoted to a lesser role and even if they're decent at that [at times], we'll never really admit it.

Darmian has exceeded his, but the expectations were very low to begin with.

Expectations were very low, at least for the fan base. But IMO Darmian has exceeded any expectations by a country mile. Still, after 2,5 years, he's very useful player to this team.
