Perhaps but I would caution anyone against a "sell Icardi for 100+ Euro and sign several players with that money" approach because we've not only seen that not end well before (Bale/Tottenham anyone?) but also because players like Icardi bring something that most people can't, which is the ability to be absolutely clinical at finishing goal scoring opportunities more often than not. We're not seriously going to expect a 20-year old out of Argentina to be able to fill that stead in a league as physical as Serie A right out of the gate, right? That's a recipe for disaster right there. Not fair to the club, not fair to the player. No one is going to benefit in that scenario.

If Icardi's release clause is triggered at Madrid and he accepts it, that's an oh well. Eventually a player like Icardi deserves Champions League football and if we can't provide it that's on us. But I wouldn't for one second advocate the club willingly selling him. If Icardi likes it here, wants to make it to Champions League here, at least give it one more go in 2018-'19 if we fail this year, he deserves the opportunity to see it through.
