A few thoughts on the ongoing transfer campaign:
The reports seem too good to be true. The papers suggest we're gunning hard for Frattesi, Scamacca and Bremer who are the exact three players that I consider absolute must-buys for this team. While we've already secured Gosens of course.
Frattesi reminds of a more offensive minded Barella who likes to run with the ball. Calhanoglu, Eriksen, neither of them really did that. They were passers much more than dribblers. The last guy who was able to bring the ball forward like that, and hook up with the forwards, was Sensi, before he tragically passed away in October 2019. De Paul would've been great too but that's in the past.
Scamacca is the best available Vlahovic consolation prize possible and a perfect candidate to replace Dzeko as our target man. I will probably be forever bitter that Suning did not get Vlahovic immediately after selling Lukaku but it is what it is.
Bremer on the other hand manhandled Vlahovic a few weeks ago and has been the standout defender of the season for me.
The question is how do we afford all of this.
Some of the outlay on Scamacca and Frattesi will likely be offset with some younger players heading the other way, hopefully Vanheusden and/or Pinamonti for example. Bremer's asking price however, seems to have risen from €15m a few months ago to around €30m.
We've also just spent a sizeable amount on Gosens (even if the money is to be paid the financial year afterwards when his option/obligation is triggered).
de Vrij may have to be sold, but I'm not against that. Problem is I just don't see us getting anything over €20m for him.
There are already rumours, from a reliable source like ANSA too, that Barella will be sacrificed, much like Hakimi was. Goes without saying that would be unacceptable but let's see what happens.
Naturally the outgoing transfers will play a big part in determining the overall success of the transfer windows but regardless of who is outgoing, Bremer, Scamacca and Frattesi MUST be acquired as far as I am concerned.
