Our cbs have certain strengths and certain weaknesses. When you play to their strengths, they can look as the best in the league. But with the way we play we expose their weaknesses. Imo the way to go forward past this season is a switch to a back 4 and a defensive duo of Skriniar and Bastoni. Also because quality wingbacks are usually expensive while it's a lot easier to find a decent fullback to do the job.

If Inzaghi gets fired, we could still go to a 4-2-3-1 without the investment.

Even I think he is way off this season. We can point to several factors like the injury, the contract situation and imo the way he is getting exposed atm. Skriniar and both de Vrij (and this season Bastoni) they all need people covering them to do what they are good in and that is defending 1 vs 1. This season there is no covering eachother or defend in the zone. They only think about their own and this creates doubt in our defence. Add up that especially Dumfries is always to late to defend the counter attack, Barella is usually also around the box so this leaves Skriniar 1 vs 1 which a lot space behind him and this creates problems for him. We aren't helping him to say the least. We could say the same thing about our left side.

That doesn't mean he shouldn't step up and show that he is the real leader of the team. This is not Skriniar level and we should expect from players like him they always get a 7 when they play. Let's hope we can renew his contract in the comings weeks and maybe this can be the return of the Skriniar we all know.
