10 years of FIFI didn't realize you were copying directly from google docs. It could be an 'enhancement' with the newer version of XF (don't recall how the older version works), but it will maintain the formatting at best it can (colors, fonts, etc) which generates a lot of bbcode under the covers.
Try this. Paste the data in, Ctrl+A / select-all, and hit the Remove Formatting button on the top left. It should then change from looking like the first pic to looking like the 2nd. This will remove all the extra formatting bbcode and get it back under the character limit.
