What does it matter what color or what gender the person teaching has? And FW is based on a TRUE story. What were they gonna do? Change the character to a black woman from the ghetto so that a small minority of oversensitive fools, wouldn't be offended that a white woman could teach black, asian and latin kids something about life? Gimme me a feckin break.
It's inspired on a true story. There's a small difference there. Pearl harbour, Last King of Scotland etc. are also all inspired by true stories.
it's about the way people are portrayed in the movie, the development of characters, the people involved who did the movie etc.
the stereotyping involved(Asians the bookworms, blacks and mexicans the young ghetto kids etc.), the moral authorative and high position of the white teacher...I mean honestly, are you going to tell me that if it wasn't for that girl, no one in the class would have ever heard about the Holocaust?
I can give you two other examples of such movies...one is Ray, where the late Ray Charles is portrayed as some weak black junkie who wouldn't get anywhere without the help of white people, the other example is The Last King of Scotland, which has too much of an "Out of Africa" touch, where the white doctor of course has to shag the black girl, who gets mistreaded by her black husband and other rubbish(although Forrest Whitaker in that movie was pure genius, just like Jamie Foxx in Ray).
A good example of how its done differently is Syriana, where people in the middle east are not portrayed as helpless morons who need the help of westerns to get over their miserable life and get better.
This whole attitude in both of the movies mentioned above, is subtle racism by the producers, where blacks, or in freedom writers case people from poorer areas, as not all of them are black, are portrayed as helpless lost cases of society that need the help of the benevolent rich suburban population to get over their miserable life.
Your black friend saw a film with a positive message and instead of seeing it for what it was, he turned it into something ugly. The problem is he sees demons where there are none.
Yes, my black friend is simply negative and doesn't see the positive message the movie got....what is the positive message btw.? That we can get over all problems if we unite and stop misunderstanding each other?? How old are you man?
Anyway...maybe you are into such movies and I'm just too cold for it, or too unsensitive. Maybe you also were touched by Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbour and Titanic..I wasn't really..I found all of them rubbish...
