I wouldn't directly compare the two.
Manchester United project is part of an urban regeneration, not just a stadium.

It's also more expensive to build in the UK and it's not because the bricks cost more. London is the most expensive of course and some parts has crazy regulation, e.g. where Chelsea is, while across town to the East it's easier to build such projects.

A lot of the cost in Milano will also go to red tape hurdles and communal infrastructure.

P.S. Everton's stadium was supposed to cost 600m euros and that includes 100m that went to unforseen obstacles. But it also had a 250m increase in construction cost, double the initial estimate, because they changed their plans in the middle of building and the land wasn't ideal for such a site so they had to work more on it.

The same stadium on more suitable soil, without random changes to the plan, wouldn't cost more than 550m in Italy.
Let's check back in 2029 (or 31) to see if a. The final price is under a billion euro and/or b. You are impressed with the final project.

JUST NOT A TOILET DESIGN.

Can be a hexagon, a square, just not designed like a perfect spot to sit your ass on it.

If the plan goes to fruit, have to be a world class architect firm like Populus.

Recap:
The plan originally laid out by the two clubs in 2018 was to build a new arena in what is effectively the car park, then once that is completed, knock down the existing Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

It was delayed and then rejected by the local and national authorities, so they looked at projects elsewhere to build individual stadiums outside the city walls, before being recalled to Plan A after six years of wasted time, money and effort.
However, the situation is far from resolved yet, as there are some specific deadlines they need to hit for this to work!

Among the reasons the first plan was rejected was the ban on tearing down the second tier of the Stadio Meazza, which will be active if there is no sale from November 10, 2025.

This is one of a few rules that were created to protect buildings of historic importance, but have effectively been used to prevent the restructuring of dilapidated stadiums in Italy instead.
Milan and Inter have offered €197m to buy the land around the San Siro area of the city, but it depends on the local authorities confirming it is a feasible project and that it is in the public interest.

Those need to be confirmed by June 30, 2025, so that the purchase agreement can be completed by July 31, 2025.
If those deadlines are not met, then the entire project could collapse yet again and force the clubs back to Square One.

Don’t worry, we are getting our friends at Nike who design our jerseys to come up with ideas for the stadium. They have some creative visions based on urinals.

Would you really trust the Italians more than the English in avoiding (un)foreseen obstacles though?

If you asked me that 10 years ago i would agree, but today? Nah. The UK isn't really the same place it was a decade ago. It might be even more corrupt and bureaucratic then Italy today. Just look at the design for the new Man U stadium. What does it look like to you?

Not so fast!

The City of Milan Prosecutor’s Office has launched an exploratory investigation into the sale of Stadio Giuseppe Meazza after Inter Milan proposed plans to renovate the ground and surrounding area.

According to SportMediaset, the investigation, coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Tiziana Siciliano, head of the Public Administration Crimes Department, and Prosecutor Marcello Viola, has been registered under model 45, with no allegations of crimes or suspects, to assess whether there could be any potential damage to public finances from the sale procedure of the stadium.

Inter and rivals AC Milan had submitted the documentation regarding the feasibility plan and their purchase offer for the stadium and surrounding areas to the Municipality of Milan, and the documents were approved through a resolution outlining the steps for the next phase.

The amounts involved in the sale are reported to be approximately €124 million for the area, in addition to €72 million and €980,000 for the stadium itself. However, €80 million, which the Municipality will need to cover for the removal of demolition debris and environmental clean up, will be subtracted from these figures.

The investigation highlights the growing scrutiny surrounding the future of San Siro, as both clubs continue their plans for redevelopment or relocation, while ensuring that public funds remain protected throughout the process.

What's the issue? Sala is going to go around that. It's Sala's interests now to pursue the stadium project because he knows the alternative and how Americans have the means to actually do the alternative so better play ball with them.

It would be quite depressing to not have the stadium in the city, the walk to the stadium is also iconic. The american way (not all, but most) of having your stadium 100km away from the City edge would probably mean less people coming to home games.

Oakland lost the Warriors, the Raiders and the Athletics recently so they would be an ideal city to relocate to in the US for Inter. Oakland Coliseum is waiting for you Inter Oakland

OTHER FEATURES- There will be 55 thousand square meters of green areas and 72 thousand square meters of underground parking in the area. The headquarters of the two clubs will also be built in the area, a hotel, commercial spaces and parks totaling 281,000 square meters. The new stadium will be spaced further away from housing and built on a podium that will serve as access for fans. "On days when there are no games, part of the podium will open up and turn into a large urban plaza, integrated with the surrounding park," it reads. Surrounding the stadium will be a kind of sports citadel with a museum, club stores, offices, hotels, food courts, and greenery. The facility will meet the specifications needed to host the Champions League finals. The dossier states that the composition of the facility will feature two rings that cite the historical memory of the 1950s San Siro project.

Cost.

Milan and Inter estimate the overall costs at €1.25b of which €708m is for the construction of the stadium alone.

Marotta latest on the stadium:
“Circa 15 days ago we and Milan presented our offer to purchase San Siro and the areas around it from the local authorities, so now there will be a public tender to see if others are also interested in the project,” Marotta told reporters while attending an Inter Club event.

“Our objective is to become the owners of this area. There will be the various bureaucratic issues, then if all goes well, work could start in 2027 and – again if all goes to plan – we hope to inaugurate the new stadium in 2030.

“This is the timescale. I am optimistic, and I think we can make it.”
There had been many who were and still are against the idea of tearing down such an iconic stadium as the Stadio Meazza, but Inter and Milan were both adamant that restructuring work would simply be too complicated with both teams playing twice a week:
“San Siro was a container of emotions, I saw Inter win their second European Cup here in 1965. But we have to think about the future now and that means a modern stadium,” concluded Marotta.
"Container of emotions" can also refer to the people reacting and over-reacting here on FIF on the topic. It's Italy after all.
