MILANO’S MAYOR INSISTS PROJECT FOR MILAN AND INTER’S NEW STADIUM GOES AHEAD

sala-milan-stadium-2203-instagram.jpg

Milan‘s Mayor Beppe Sala insists Inter and Milan are fully committed to a project for a new stadium in the area of San Siro, publishing a document signed by representatives of both clubs last week.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported this morning that the project that had been presented at the end of 2021 was no longer valid due to bureaucratic issues and protests from residents and environmentalists. That led Sala to induct a public debate over the matter which apparently convinced the Milanese sides to pull out of the project.

However, Sala has denied the report publishing a document signed by Inter and Milan where the representatives of the two clubs insist that they are keen on continuing the project.

The document posted by Sala on Instagram reads: ‘”We inform you that we are preparing the dossier of the project that the coordinator of the public debate will use to conduct it.”

“As you can see from the image, the two clubs confirmed last week that they are preparing the documents for the public debate. Last week, not months ago,” wrote Sala.

“Nothing has happened since I received this letter. Today, La Gazzetta dello Sport published a scoop regarding Milan and Inter’s intention to build the stadium somewhere else.

“Now, or La Gazzetta dello Sport are looking for a good title, or the clubs are telling me something different (and they write it too). Having an official document in my hands, I want to think about the first option.

That being said, I want to tell everyone that the municipality has many other things to think about in this difficult moment.”

Italian comedy show :yao:

PS: Did you notice the date on that letter? :ROFLMAO: :palm:

This evening, Inter and Milan released a joint statement to news agency ANSA that suggested both these stories have some truth to them and there is still absolutely no certainty the stadium will go ahead:
“With regards to the project of a new stadium for Milan, FC Internazionale and AC Milan wish to clarify that they are continuing a constructive dialogue with the local authorities to prepare a dossier that can be used in the public debate, so we can hope to accelerate the process to create a new San Siro, within a wider masterplan to requalify the area dedicated to sport and entertainment.

“For both clubs the creation of a new stadium remains an absolute priority, having the certainty of the timing for the authorisation, remaining open to other options if there were not the right conditions to build a new stadium at San Siro as originally planned.”

This note essentially pressures the Milanese authorities into setting some sort of specific timetable, warning the clubs will not wait for much longer before considering options such as Sesto San Giovanni rather than the San Siro area of the city.

That's the right way to proceed with this. I mean clubs should definitely proceed with the Sesto San Giovanni option with something concrete. So that the clubs can force city council's hand even more. Clubs cannot afford to be on this situation for long. I think Zhang and Singer didn't really understand what it required to build a stadium in Italy, specially in Milano.

The only way you build a new stadium is you are the literal mafia (see Jive)

it's really not that hard to understand why the municipal is dragging things out. they own the public infrastructure, they currently charge rent to the two tenants inter and milan. if they allow the san siro project to go ahead and allow inter and milan to own the new stadium, they not only lose rent from inter and milan, they lose the ability to rent for concerts and other events (expos etc.).

so essentially, they either are forced to sell the san siro to inter and milan for (not very much) a bunch of cash, or they want inter and milan to pony up the cash to build the thing but then the new stadium belongs to the municipality, so they could continue to charge rent from events.

both options are basically pie in the sky type shit that neither inter and milan will go for, because who wants to be treated as a cash cow and milked for all their worth?

and at the end of the day, the municipality would be stuck with crumbling infrastructure that once the new cathedral stadium is built, will lose almost all money making ventures to the new competition in town.

sesto san giovanni just seems like a no-brainer at this stage given all the fuckery that's gone on. or sala and co. wise the fuck up and sell san siro to the clubs for a discount given that it'd cost the municipality more in the long run for maintenance without future revenues

There's a huge political cost for selling/losing public property to private companies. Especially in countries like Italy.

How many people are employed at the stadium? And how many of those are municipal workers? Not rhetorical questions, I'd like to know the answer because it can complement what you've said about them losing a cash cow.

There will be jobs created with the stadium too. But the times of municipally owned stadiums will come to an end if Italy wants their clubs to be at the top ever again.

You have got to be kidding me. Complete self sabotage here. I'm seeing the potential Milan investors only want a solo stadium and no combo project as well.

Don't have one.
I absolutely don't have a problem with it whatsoever. In fact, our priority should be that we finally have our own solo stadium, whatever that may be, even if it's an old meazza.

If Milan leaves and starts a new stadium, we have all the leverage for the Meazza... It's important to remain within the city, it gives you a lot more exposure to all the tourists, as well as prestige.

I like La Cattedrale project to be honest but nothing will beat the iconic stadium of San Siro. It just dazzles you, both outside and inside.

But it is not tenable. No matter how historic or prestigious it is, the stadium is old and can not be upgraded to include modern, money-making facilities. Therefore there will always be a ceiling to how much revenue it will create for us. Most significantly, it will never be ours to profit from.

If Milan fuck off and build their own stadium - which is totally within the financial capabilities of their owners, unlike ours - they would leave us in the dust and we would fall decades behind them.

It can indeed be upgraded, it just costs far too much that it's almost not worth the trouble as with a few extra millions (50-100 give or take, which is significant but not that much in a 500m project) you can get a new stadium.
