BARELLA IS INTER PLAYER!
- Landed in Milan (Thursday night), medical and contract signing today. Then immediately goes to work, he’s ready for Conte.
- To Cagliari is €45M in two payments: €12M now for the loan, €25M in a year (obligation to buy).
- €8M in bonuses that are easy to reach. Five-year, €2.5M to the player.
Can you be happy because your vacation is now over and a few miles North waiting for you is a coach with caliber of Antonio Conte, ready to fill your muscles with lactic acid? The answer is yes, if your name is Nicolo Barella and you have been on the phone for a month and a half waiting for news. Yesterday, your phone rang one more time: it’s done, book the plane, awaiting you are medical visits and tour in Asia.
The figures - The marriage was consummated yesterday afternoon, after the meeting between Giuseppe Marotta, Inter CEO, and Tommaso Giulini, Cagliari president: both did the honors in the office in Milan. The agreement was then found by altering the figure just a bit compared to Monday meeting in Lega office: €12M loan, another €25 in obligation to buy after 12 months, plus €8M in easily reachable bonuses. So here we are at the total of €45M, basically the assessment that both clubs agreed on at the beginning of the week. But that’s not all: in addition is another €4M which are a lot harder to achieve, linked to team results. Bonuses that Inter would be very happy to pay (most likely a Scudetto or Champions League victory).
In Lugano - Once meeting was over, everything else was set in motion to bring Barella to Conte as quickly as possible. The midfielder, now former Cagliari player, landed in Milan on Thursday night and Friday he will have medical exams. Then it’s contract signing: five-year worth €2.5M plus bonuses per season. Conte is waiting for him in Lugano: it’s very likely that the midfielder will be able to get there Friday night or Sunday morning at the very latest. Then he could attend the first friendly of the summer between his club against Lugano at the Cornaredo stadium. The €45M that Inter will spend to bring him to Appiano Gentile represents the highest transfer fee ever paid by the club, tied with that of Cristian Vieri: times have changed, these operations are not financially comparable but it still has a certain effect to it.
Reduced vacation - Inter and Cagliari both won, if we talk about figures. But surely the biggest winner here is Barella who spent the last few weeks on edge because he wasn’t sure where he was going: he was close to Roma at one point. However, that was rejected by Barella because he was convinced several times by Conte who called him repeatedly to reassure the midfielder that he will be part of his project. Barella even said no to a better offer (Roma offered €3M, €500K more than Inter’s) and he gave up a few days off because he was on vacation after U-21 European Championship. “He’s very strong, I see myself in him,” said Nainggolan in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport last October. That assist was successful. Nine months have passed and starting today, Conte can finally “cuddle” him.
