What you just described is the job of any midfielder. But we are not 2016 Inter, we are now in a level where we need our midfielders to be extra in every aspect, otherwise they should be benched.

For a player in his position it’s disappointing to have 0 goals and 1 assist in 12 games. Cant shoot, cant cross, loses the ball continuously, doesnt take free kicks… what’s so special about him other than keeping the ball and exchanging it with the wing back?

I’m not a hater, but I never liked his style of play and always have seen him overrated. My first choice to sell without any hesitation.
The hot take of the day.

He is hurrying too much with his shots. But I see nothing wrong with how he plays otherwise the past 3 games. I don't think he needs to score goals to be impactful for us. Being good on the ball and being all over the pitch means A LOT. He is THE engine right now.

Even when we lost most of our right side, Barella still being there helps a lot. Replace the missing Dumfries or Cuadrado or Pavard for Barella on the pitch (not position, obviously) and put some other midfielder and we are a different team on that side.

I mean if you always seen him as overrated, what do I have to say ?
If after watching him since 2019, in 2023 you still think he can't shoot, can't cross, loses the ball continuously and doesn't take freekicks (who cares about that ? We have Hakan and Dimarco... Still he scored last year against Udinese while Calhanoglu who is supposed to be a specialist hasn't scored any for us despite taking a ton of them. Free kicks is just a weird metric to judge any player on). The man has 45 assists at Inter, at the start of his 5th season...
Let's just agree to disagree. Imo, Barella would walk into any midfield in Serie A and most of the top teams in Europe would love to have him too. If he didn't spend so much energy litterally being every where on the pitch, you can be sure that he would be more lucid in the box but that's not his job, as you said his job is to defend, be available, link attack and defence and he did it very well in the last games.
Him not taking free kicks is not a metric, yes… I’m just trying to find something special about him.

Yes we have to agree to disagree because I seem to be the only one here who sees him differently ever since he came here.

That you might not watch the game properly if you don't see the value in Barella.

Since he came to Inter, he's been almost like a sure starter for Inter and Italy, between many coaches.

I get what he's trying to say, but Barella's impact in this Inter has been immense. It's just some of us want the best out of him, and feels like he's way too inconsistent at times. It's a shame that such a quality player is being let down by his own character and incompetence.

This man needs rest. Played non-stop for us in recent years, played more than 50 matches for us alone every season and also played for Italy. This guy is covering what 12/13 km per game? Yesterday he looked more irritated than usual. He went to Thuram or Lautaro? in the second half because of their positioning with a cross I thought. But it seemed more irritated than usual.

He is still one of the most important players of this Inter but I don't think we can expect him to score a 8 every game.

Still made the key pass in the goal action. Barella needs to rest, he can't because he brings something none of the other midfielders bring. Makes difficult things look easy. I thought we got a good player to allow him to play less in Frattesi but at the moment I'm struggling to see it happen. I'd try Asllani there sometimes.

Before Barella is rested, there are several other players on the team that desperately need it more urgently.

Professional footballers consistently hold Barella in high esteem, often valuing his contributions more than fans and pundits do.

No matter the Inter system, Barella's the untouchable puzzle piece. Bring in all the coaches and their fancy philosophies; there'll always be a reserved spot for barella, because, well, he's THAT good.

We all tend to worship the "what ifs" instead of appreciating someone who actually delivers results - it's like cheering for a hypothetical hero instead of the real deal.

That's why we still have folks hyping Sensi as world-class after just 10 games. But injuries are the excuse, otherwise, he is painted as the second coming of Christ.

Barella's practically untouchable. Stats-wise, he might not be hitting my ideal numbers, but I "blame" Lautaro lol, he's scoring all the goals! Imagine adding Barella's potential on top of that; we'd be cruising towards a perfect season, breaking records left and right!

Great post.

I was critical to Barella in some key matches last season, for example some of the Juve games. This time he delivered, he was INSIDE the game and wasn't beaten by Rabiot.

In general, Barella is just like Johnny here explains. He doesn't maybe score or assist goals this season, but his contribution is massive in every match. The movement, positioning, mentality, approach. Barella has been the untouchable since Conte's second season, including the NT. Conte, Mancini, Inzaghi, Spalletti. He's the key man for all these coaches, irregardless of his stats in the scoresheet. Maybe there's a reason for that?

Barella is a quantity player. He will probably never be a high G+A guy and that’s fine because it’s not really what he is. The thing that sets him apart from other workhorses is that he’s actually a baller. He’s always in the vicinity of the ball and can to make a killer play at any moment.

How do you define high G+A? He had 15 G+A across all competition for the past 2 years and so far he only has 1, so it's not wrong to say he's been underwhelming this year. But as coolman44 said, even when "bad", he's still very crucial to us.

He plays a bit deeper IMO this year and doesn't attack as eagerly, he picks his moments. He's all-around player and very crucial for us.

Exactly. It's also kinda obvious that because we use our wingbacks so much, he should stay back. Overall him and Hakan are our silent protagonists this season. Fuck it, let's add De Vrij there as well.

I expect less from this team this season at this point. It's almost december and we haven't had a real downfall in form yet, even tho there were injuries to some crucial players.
