I can't believe the amount of criticism Barella seems to be getting at FIF this season. This kid has scored or created 10 goals already this season, and yet people complain. Yes, he is overworked. Yes, he looks a bit jaded and desperately needs a break. But despite all that, he is having a great season. Not just in end product, but his technique and work rate is top class & improving year on year. One of the very few truly world class players we have.

At the mo, Barella is among the best midfielders in the world. We are so fucking lucky to have this absolute gem of a player who also loves Inter.
He deserves criticism regardless of his contribution to the team, which is very much appreciated. We are looking more at the long term here, there are few aspects that should be improved especially for a midfielder. Oh and he is far from world class but whatever.

But who am I talking to, in your eyes every player is angel and shouldn't be criticized.

Criticism is not blasphemy, a deadly sin or "hating". Some people need to realize that.

Barella has been making mistakes more than usual in this season. I think it is partly with him being simply overworked for a long time. He hasn't had a proper break for 2 years, apart from the COVID which I guess wasn't a real break, at least not mentally. And having a break is definitely about having a mental break too from the sport altogether.

Its ok to criticise players. We are in a forum after all, and I respect opposing opinions. So if you choose to criticise a player, thats cool. If I criticise the excessive criticism, thats cool too. We don't have to agree.

It's different for different teams, depending on their circumstance and objectives, but from a quick Google:
Seven traits of an effective leader:
Effective Communicators
Accountable and Responsible
Long-term Thinkers
Self-motivated
Confident
People-oriented
Emotionally Stable

How many of these does Barella "tick"?

This Inter needs a "calm in the storm" type player, level headed, not a mad dog chasing cars. Can't fault Barella for his effort and passion, and he is the best player on this team in terms of ability, but he needs to keep calm and cool especially in high pressure moments, which is every match day for us, unfortunately.
Check the definition of a captain of a ship, this one isn't exhaustve enough :D

How do you know that Barella isn't this kind of person around his teammates?

Roy Keane was captain.
Antonio Conte was captain.
How many boxes did they tick?

That's not fair to ask, they come from a different era where you play hard, with grit/physicality and malice. Keane, by his own admission, is not compatible to this social media generation of players. A lot of what he did then you can't get away with now. But while emotionally unstable and volatile, they weren't petulant and whiny:

Also note both were older (late 20s), so more seasoned and experienced. In any case, for Keane who I am more familiar with:
Effective Communicators
Accountable and Responsible
Self-motivated
Confident

But like i said before, depends on the teams circumstance. In my mind the perfect captain for Inter would be Jorginho, Azpilicueta, Marquinhos, or Koke, great communicators who play with calmness and quietly elevate the performance of everyone around them.

I beg to differ. The key issue is we shouldn't always use captaincy as a leverage to negotiate for a player's service. We made this mistake with Icardi. To an extent, we also made the same mistake with Rano when he wasn't ready (while we were hoping him to be our next Materazzi).

The captain armband should be earned. This is why so many of us are in Skriniar's camp. He is loyal to the club, lost his starting position once, and fought back tenaciously. Our system should be set up to reward people who has already proven their dedication. In this case Skriniar fulfils this criteria.

This is not to say Barella doesn't deserve to be our captain. He has refused many clubs before and often runs himself to the ground. But the logic of "because we need him to commit to the club, so we will promise him to be our next captain" is a logic fallacy.

The other issue is his on-pitch gesture. Perisic might be an asshole in real life but his body language on the pitch exudes confidence and shows gratitude to his teammates. Barella is the exact opposite in this regard. If I were an older player, I wouldn't mind running the extra mile for Perisic. But I'd be super annoyed if Barella kept throwing his hands at me.

Captaining a big club like Inter requires so much more than just footballing skills. In our treble season, Zanetti was leading a team of captains at the time:
  1. Lucio (captain of Brazil)
  2. Stankovic (captain of Serbia)
  3. Cordoba (captain of Colombia)
  4. Chivu (captain of Romania)
  5. Pandev (captain of Macedonia)
  6. Eto'o (captain of Cameroon)
Whether Barella has the same people management skills will dictate what legacy he'll leave. Rano was weak on that. Icardi was a massive failure. Barella needs to keep improving to cement his position and command respect.

This guy doesn't even look like he's 20% fit. Needs to come off at half time. Clearly playing with an injury.

He is wasted. Needs a break, physically and mentally. I know he is too important to us, but could sit one out (next game hopefully).

Totally. Should take a break at least in Venezia game IMO. Vidal should start that match, he hasn't played as starter for a while now. Maybe even Spezia match could be a rest for Barella, at least as a starting player.

Starting to worry about him, tbh. Hope it's just fatigue and not something else. Get well soon.

I'm just going to say it, I've said it for a long time. Over rated as fuck! Good midfielder, far from world class.

Sick of his poor attitude and inability to score a single goal for Inter this season.

Yet, somehow we'll miss him dearly in the knockout stage, I'd say 90% we are eliminated by the likelihood of our draw.

Must reinforce in January.

You couldn't wait till he fucked up, could you? One red card doesn't change anything.

He's been fucking up for over a month. He won the best midfielder in Italy award when he's not even the best midfielder in our team. Highlights how over rated he is.
