Inter are preparing to make Nicolo Barella the club’s captain as part of the new contract they are readying for the midfielder, according to a report in the Italian media.

As has been reported today by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the next job for Inter to tackle after the renewal of Lautaro Martinez is the new contract for Nicolo Barella, who has become one of the most important parts of the Nerazzurri setup.

The contract he will be offered will keep him with the club until at least 2026 and will see him earn almost €5 million a season, a figure that includes potential bonuses.

This means he will not be one of the highest earners at the club despite the plans to hand him the captaincy.

Providing the Sardinian remains at the club and plays at this level, he would likely be offered a more lucrative deal before 2026 to keep him at the club even longer.

Don't have one.
Would rather give bastoni or skriniar captaincy, even de vrij, they seem like more of a captain material, for me at least. If I go player by player, barella would be my second or third choice, so if that's true, I won't complain much.

I see no difference in Barella or Skriniar who should be captain. I'm fine with either one.

Maybe they see Barella being a more fitting personality for that role. Management see a lot more regarding the team and the players and thus know a lot more than what we do.

I remember reading this exact rumour a year or more ago

There's a pretty concerning scene when he got out of the tunnel after HT. Barella was just sitting there looking completely demoralised. Dzeko went up to prep talk him. Then Skriniar was holding his face, lifted him up, and held Barella by his shoulder to go back to the pitch.

Maybe Inzaghi gave him some beating in the dressing room. That's why he's motivated in the 2nd half. Great performance as well but honestly I still don't think he's captain material for us yet.

All the more reason skriniar should be our captain next season and not Barella.

Sorry I don't. I was watching CBS and the scene lasted for a whole 45 secs. I guess he took some beating from Inzaghi in the dressing room for not pressing hard enough. (Which coach doesn't like to use a young player as scapegoat to send a message across to the squad...) But it's evident that Barella got very moody. He's just sitting at the staircase, facing the tunnel, complaining to everyone.

Dzeko went up for a very serious prep talk and kept petting his head. Then Skriniar was holding Barella's face like he's consoling a girl who's about to burst into tears, grabbed him by his arm, and took him to the pitch.

I like Barella. But he's not ready to captain the team yet. Always moaning about a wrong pass and throwing excessive gestures at the ref. If anything, Perisic seems to be the most mature one on the pitch. But everyone knows he won't be our captain. That leaves us with Skriniar being the obvious choice.

- For consistency, assists awarded as per legaseriea.it
- kc = Key contributions

- GC = Goal Contributions ie total goals the player has scored or created = goals + assists + kc
- GC% = Percentage of Inter goals the player has scored or created
