Martins Rocked By Mum's Death
Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins has put his pre-season on hold following the tragic death of his mother…
Alhaja Monsurat Martins died in the early hours of Thursday morning while fleeing her Lagos apartment after a petrol tanker burst into flames nearby. The 62-year-old had been attempting to move her car to a safer spot, and it is believed her death was shock-related.
Obafemi Martins was inconsolable after hearing the news, and will miss Toon’s upcoming friendly against Doncaster Rovers after travelling to Nigeria last night to be with family and friends.
The Super Eagles star was famously close to his mother. In fact, his international career came under threat in February 2007 after he skipped a clash against Ghana because he was concerned about his mum’s health.
Biola Martins, Obafemi’s brother, said in The Sun: “Oba was closer to our mother than anyone else in the family. He just wanted to get on the plane and find out for himself that our mother is truly no more.
“He’s still in shock and disbelief and feels terribly down. Oba always consulted her first in any decision to do with his career.
“Our mother stood by him when everyone else condemned his decision to dump school in pursuit of an unpredictable future in football.”
The ex-Internazionale forward will attend the funeral, which is to be held on Friday.
