Time for me to do another player profile – this time it is rising young star Assane Gnoukouri!
Assane Gnoukouri
Assane Gnoukouri has had a bit of an unusual career path to date. Originally developing at the Marseille youth team, for bureaucratic reasons still unknown to me, he was released. At this point he signs for Altovicentino, a Serie D side, for six months, before moving to our Primavera last July.
Since coming to the Primavera, he has not only impressed, but really surprised on his ability to stake his claim. Considering peers like Michele Rocca, Andrea Palazzi, Demetrio Steffe and Mohamed Dabo, it’s a real testimony to Assane Gnoukouri the way he has claimed a starting berth in the Primavera.
A box-to-box midfielder, Assane Gnoukouri has drawn comparisons with Patrick Vieira. Whilst to date I have yet to see any really significant contribution from his defensive elements, his composure in possession and willingness to pass the ball forwards (a shocking damnation of our midfield that I consider this to be such a quality) have impressed. He’s very mobile, and does have some semblance of off-the-ball movement which can often be found lacking in younger players. Against Roma he had the highest number of passes of anyone in the team, with quite a nice pass completion rate to complement it.
Assane Gnoukouri hasn’t been prolific at the youth level – with only one league goal to his name – however it should be pointed out that there he has played as a central midfielder in a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 formation with Rocca, Bonazzoli, Puscas, Camara typically offering the goalscoring outlets.
Going forward I still don’t expect to see much of the goalscoring contribution from Assane Gnoukouri, but I do think he will start to nicely connect up our midfield and offer a bit of dynamic that we currently lack there. One of the focal points for me going forward is his lack of bulk – he’s quite a skinny lanky kid at the moment and could do with another 5-10 kilos of muscle to help increase his ability to influence the middle of the park.
