Lets get this thread back on topic, shall we?

A chapter from Zanetti's biography on Facchetti, if anyone's interested.

The fans of these colors will tell you it is not enough to play for many years in a team. It is not enough to kiss the jersey after a goal, not enough to say things in order to send the fans over the moon. The fans, above all in Italy (but also in all the other Latin Countries), it is a question that borders on philosophy. Often, to use a definition that has been a bit abused, it is said that being a fan is a faith. I think that it is more of a style of living, a way to be. For this, I fell instantly in love with Inter; because in this way it was like me and it is like me, because in this club there are values and ideas that do not exist elsewhere.

Inter is different. It is not rhetoric. Inter always goes against the current, never involving itself in subtle power games. Inter is transparent, because what happens here is on the up and up and does not need screens or guards, since there is nothing to hide. I understood from the first day I set foot in Appiano Gentile. And I realized thanks to an enlightened teacher: Giacinto Facchetti, the captain of captains, the example, the symbol, the entire par excellence.

Having him as a mentor, guide and friend was a blessing for me. He taught me what it means to wear the Inter jersey, and that to be an Interista is something that goes beyond being simply a fan; he taught me that in football yes, results count, but there are more important values: loyalty, fair play, honesty, respect towards supporters and opponents. Essential qualities for an Inter player, and that Giacinto, every day, tried to convey to us, even in times when everything seemed to turn against us and in which the goddess Eupalla seemed to have hatched a conspiracy against the Nerazzurri. [Eupalla is the goddess of calcio, invented by the journalist Gianni Brera]

"Sweet, smart, courageous, reserved, far from vulgar reaction. Thanks again for having honored Inter, and with her all of us." So, with these moving and sincere words, Massimo Moratti recalled him after his death. It was a sad day, that bloody September 4, 2006. It was the day when Inter lost its flag-bearer, its spiritual leader. And when all football, not just the Italian, lost a man who was not only a giant on the field, but also in everyday life.

The values, the passion, the dedication that for many years he put to the service of the nerazzurra cause, however, has remained intact. And even today, for all of us Interisti, Giacinto is a constant presence though no longer with us physically. It is no coincidence that after every victory the first dedication is always for him. It is no coincidence that towards him, still, reins an almost sacred respect. It is no coincidence that he has always been considered the model and an example to follow. Because Giacinto has been and always will be the image of Inter.

Giacinto was a "hombre vertical", as we say in Argentina, a gentle giant who commanded respect. One who did not waste his breath with the words, because he did not take much to make himself understood, and he did not like the spotlight. A brave man, a champion of honesty and clarity. One that never had to lower his head in front of the powerful, to him it is sufficient to be respectful of the rules, it is the the same as what he learned at oratory as a child. He had a diary, and on the first page he wrote a sentence from Tolstoy: "The more we believe our existence depends solely on our actions, the more this becomes possible.

I am proud and take pride in wearing the captain's armband of Inter, especially knowing that the armband was worn for years by a person like Giacinto. The greatest satisfaction is to be considered his heir. There is no higher compliment that can be made to me. Being Facchetti's heir does not only mean asserting oneself in the field, it means leaving a mark outside as well, showing that the career of a player is not only measured by cups and championships, but above all fairness, courage, charisma.

A strong relationship was established between us immediately. We understood each other on the fly, without much explanation. He often told me of the epic challenges between Inter and Independiente in the sixties. He had lived on the pitch, a protagonist. "What battles, especially in Argentina," he said remembering the boiling climate at the Doble Visera. Those were years when the cameras had not yet monopolized the pitch, when almost everything was "permissible" in order to stop opponents. And, at the time, the Argentinian players were famous for being a bit rough, so to speak. The fans were no better: oranges on the field, insults, threats,. In the wake of those memorable stories of triumph, I began to understand the true Inter, particularly what it meant to be an Interisti. The badge, the history, the pride, but especially feelings, love and passion.

For years Giacinto was an essential support for all Inter players. He had a good word for everyone, he always knew how to resolve difficult situations and the right buttons to push to spur one on to give more. He always took up the side of the players, he helped us in every circumstance: he taught us to not give up in difficult times and , I help us in every circumstance has taught us not to give up in difficult times, and not get big-headed when things went well.

The news of his illness was a blow, a bolt from the blue. It came just when Inter was recovering all that, in the years before, had been removed. It was in full "Calciocas", and finally justice would give us reason. But Giacinto it was not a question of revenge. Was the simply respect for the rules. He lived his last months with the usual great dignity, asking only to be left in peace, that the news of his illness not be heralded by newspapers and television. I visited him in the hospital many times, hoping until the end for a miracle. Everyone, from the players to the warehouse workers gathered around him. At that time, our only thought was to do something for Giacinto. The occasion arrived on the 27th of August, 2006, the Italian Super Cup against Rome. The disease had consumed him by now, but until the end he was seized with the events of his Inter. The day before the match I went to see him at the hospital and I made him a promise: "Giacinto, I swear that I will return here tomorrow with the cup." I kept my word. This challenge with Rome was not simply just a game of football; something miraculous occurred during those 120 minutes of play. We went down 3-0, and then in the second half, everything changed. We transformed ourselves, we became a true team, and we fought for every ball. Two times Vieira and Crespo brought us to 3-3, and then an additional from Figo sealed it up and gave us the cup. I cannot say what strange mechanism took over us all after that terrible first half: I only know that each of us on the pitch that evening played not only to win the cup, but to bring that cup to Giacinto.

The next day I went to the hospital with the trophy. "It's for you" I said. He smiled with the little strength that remained to him. That smile has kept me going, unforgettable. It still lights me up and stays with me, always and wherever.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIACINTO!

On 18 July 1942, one of the greatest players ever to don the Nerazzurri jersey was born. Happy birthday Giacinto – you’ll always be one of us!

MILAN - The name Giacinto Facchetti means something different to all Inter fans.

Some remember his forays up that left flank, wearing his eternal No.3 jersey. Some start reciting that legendary line-up - Sarti, Burgnich, Facchetti, Bedin, Guarneri, Picchi... - and are instantly transported back to La Grande Inter's historic night in Vienna.

All Inter fans have a special memory of Giacinto. Ultimately, Giacinto represents Inter - he is the original Interista Dentro, an icon for us all.

As the man himself once said: 'There are days when being an Interista is easy, others when it's a duty and others still when it's an honour.' But Giacinto didn't just say it - he embodied this sentiment, in his values, his style, his choices.

Giacinto Facchetti is our past, our present and our future.

Happy birthday, Giacinto!

10 years. How fast the time has gone.

How high we have climbed and how deep we have fallen.

He is terribly missed, the man who put everything back on track.

Of many positions in this club, we need someone like him.

A man with a clear idea where to lead our path and understand the value of this club.

GIACINTO FACCHETTI NAMED AMONG THE MOST IMPORTANT PLAYERS IN WORLD CUP HISTORY
The French magazine has announced the first names on its list including

MILAN – With just under three months to go before the start of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, France Football has published a list of the 100 most important players in the history of the tournament. The respected French publication has so far only released the first names on the list but one of these is Giacinto Facchetti.

In particular, France Football focused on the performances of Facchetti at the 1970 World Cup where he was captain of the Azzurri and he distinguished himself at the competition as one of the best left-backs with his tactical versatility and strength. Italy eventually lost in the final against Brazil after the legendary 4-3 win against West Germany in extra-time at the semi-final stage. Giacinto Facchetti will also be remembered as the first Italian defender to wear the captain’s armband at two consecutive World Cups (Mexico 1970 and West Germany 1974) before Paolo Maldini (France 1998 and Japan/South Korea 2002) and Fabio Cannavaro (Germany 2006 and South Africa 2000) repeated the feat.

France Football reprinted what it wrote in 1970 a few days before the start of the World Cup: “Giacinto Facchetti is a perfect gentleman. Captain of Italy, he’s kind, intelligent, smiley and he is able to speak French. He personally experienced the disaster against North Korea in 1966 and he’s not forgotten it. He was then the Italy captain at the 1968 European Championship. Today, he’s found his balance and is convinced that Italy will have a good World Cup.”

GIACINTO IS HERE
Twelve years have gone by since 4 September 2006, but Giacinto is still here with us with all of his morality, fairness and humanity

"That morning, perhaps the most important of my life, I put on my new suit and took the train for Milan. I had to go to via Larga, near the Teatro Lirico to sign the Inter registration card. I was moving like I was sleepwalking. Those minutes on that train never went by. The minutes spent waiting on via Larga were like centuries. Finally, they put a pen in my hands and the card in front of me. I signed: Giacinto Facchetti. Then, I went on my way down the stairs with my heart beating fast. I was an Inter player! I was an Inter player!"

(Se no che gente saremmo, Gianfelice Facchetti, Longanesi 2011)

‘ll Cipe’ never stopped belonging to Inter, not even now twelve years on from that tragic day. A few days later in Florence, Esteban Cambiasso embodied the sentiments of all Inter fans by pointing to the sky after a goal.

Ideally, we still look there every day with heads held high to remember who Giacinto was with his morality, fairness and humanity.

Giacinto è qui. Giacinto is here.

How much i miss this guy in uncertain times like these. It would all be so much easier to swallow if i atleast knew a competent Interista was still in a powerful position in this club who is watching over what beppe and antonio are doing Instead we have a 28 year old chinese in charge who probably heard of inter for the first time when his dad bought the club. The only guy who is as much an interista as Facchetti was, and still is in a powerful position at the club is JZ4 but he seems happy to just smile for the cameras and that is it.

Sadly we ll never find another guy like him but how much i wish he was still around right now.

Was he really that competent in management? We weren't really doing great things on the pitch, in transfers, or otherwise in those days.

I honestly have no idea, it s nearly impossible to determine who deserves credit for what in our mgm. I mean what did Branca exactly do? Is he a genius for building our treble squad or is he a fraud for what happened afterwards?

Anyways in my book Giacinto laid the foundation for our treble squad and was fundamental in transforming our mentality even if it only showed after his death.

Just look at how close some of our senators were with him especially Cuchu .

Anyways you might be right and he basically just was a more outspoken Zanetti but even that would calm me with two jubentinos seemingly in charge.

I salute his awesomeness to be able convince don MM for it

Found this nice letter, thought of sharing it.

Six years since you're gone, seventy you would be celebrating today.
I cannot even remember my first memory of you, nor can I convey my first feeling of you. They say, dear Cipe, you were not half as serious as you looked. They also say that you loved to sing, yet did it in privacy. That you were slow to anger but quick to commit. That you looked upon your own mistakes with a smile.

Yes. There it is. The first thing I think when I see any photo featuring you is "Englishman in New York". That´s the song I hum whenever you cross my memory, and believe me, Giacinto: you´ve been a comfort so many times in this grim soccer of today.

Takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile,
be yourself, no matter what they say...

And what a man you were, Giacintone Magno, Garrone, Cipelletti. It all was down to Herrera, a mix-up for the man who spoke soccer in four languages and mixed both, and when he saw that tower you were, he called you Cipelletti.

In the years where a dark colored player is booed, what would Jair say, dear Cipe? You received him with a warmness and affection that, in those years when "colored" was "different" and "dangerous", few could imagine. Only three played in Serie A back then, and when he came to Inter, Jair did't have a home to settle upon arrival. You jumped up and offered, you opened your house's doors wide for him.

You didn't see eye to eye with many of your teammates, still you never spoke ill of others. Even with the one you resembled the least, that pesky Sandrino Mazzola. I could say loads of things that crossed between you two... when you scored and he didn't... when you both were managers... the fact you were from a small place in Lombardy not far away from his father´s birthplace (and you shared Valentino's orderly and quiet fashion, while he was much more outspoken and rebellious) the Fabbri times, when you opposed him and Sandro stayed wayward neutral... So many things could be said, couldn't they?

I know you'd simply scroll your head and say a handful of pretty things, and that´s the beauty: not from tongue out. You really were that way.

I mix present and past, were and are, because you are not someone who just passed, donned the colors and saluted. You played your last season in so much pain: your back was injured, still you wanted to make it to the 1978 World Cup, but when it was clear you wouldn't make it, you gave way for young Cabrini.

You, no other, inspired the Beppe Baresis, the Riccardo Ferris, the Beppe Bergomis, the Javier Zanettis, a lineage of blue (and black) blood so thick and engraved, no one may ever discuss it. Even when expelled, you were surrounded by applause. Applause at the beginning and at the end. Shy as you were with all this unexpected fame, you may now be looking upon the Livornese Picchi with a sort of shame: what did I do to be so loved?

You were the way you were, Cipe, that way and no other. Your rare, solar smiles, in a serious boy´s face. The fact you marked so clean and polite, and when you stretched your hand to a rival you meant peace, not harm. You meant it to be temporary rivalry, and after the game, no hard feelings.

Still, you loved the Biscione with a passion. Dapper and calm, I remember your first game as manager in charge of accompaning the squad. Calm, but with fire in your eyes. So collected yet so firm. Like a living oak, larger than life, wider than our fears, always with that gaze that seemed distracted and far-away-looking, that seemed to soar over our mere worldly matters.

You left us your legacy of correctness and chivalry, your wonderful, composed family, and a deep sorrow in our hearts. You may be departed, but left the joy of your presence in our hearts. From Facchetti to Cipelletti, you carved a path to inmortality with your values and seriousness. Ciao Cipe: Grazie ancora, 70 di questi anni...

RIP LEGEND!! :proud:

Flies in sadly! And even worse, to mark the passing of this legend this is the time Moggi usually creeps back into the spotlight to tarnish his good name!!!

Forza Facchetti!!!

Very disappointed by the club that there was not official statement or dedication to him. He is a legend to the extent that we should remember him on both his birthday and his day of death the fact that from our club nobody except for zaneti gave a statement or even a simple tweet saying he is still in our thought is very sad.

Remember when cuchu came out wearing giacintos shirt till this day i get emotional when i see this shit.

Anywyas i know i m also a day late but RIP cipe you ll always be in our memories and will always miss your leadership.

For lovers of conspiracies, let's not forget that it was Facchetti who led this kamikaze attack on Juventus' stronghold of Italian football and he almost captained the first tripleta that we wete robbed off in the Coppa final vs Juventus. Maybe #RubInter does not approve.

You cannot simply forget this guy. Poor Inter instragram admins just 'liked' Zanetti's post, so it's not like no one could take the time to upload a small picture.
