Romelu Lukaku believes “something big is emerging this season” at Inter and was bowled over by San Siro. “I had goose bumps. I missed playing in such a warm environment.”

The striker finally completed his transfer from Manchester United for a club record fee of €65m – payable over five years – plus performance-related bonuses after weeks of negotiations.

He made the idea debut, scoring in the 4-0 Serie A victory over Lecce at San Siro.

“I’m always ready and prepare well. For the goal, I knew where the ball would end up: it was a fantastic moment, my whole family was at the stadium. I also knew that we would win, also because we’ve been training really well,” Lukaku told Inter TV.

“Everything was very special. I’ve missed playing in such a warm environment, with flags and a full stadium before kick-off. It was special and I was really excited: I had goose bumps because the history of the club really was perceptible. I thought of all the great players who have played in that stadium, while the crowd got behind us during every piece of play.

“There's the feeling that something big is emerging this season, but now we have to continue working hard, because the road ahead is still a long one. However, the start we’ve made has been fantastic.”

When he first arrived, Lukaku confessed he had owned an Inter jersey with Adriano’s name.

“The first final I saw on TV was Inter 3-0 Lazio at the Parc des Princes (for the UEFA Cup). This is one of the reasons why I’ve always followed Italian football. I’ll never forget Ronaldo’s goal and the skills he showed in that game. What a spectacle!

“And then I also adored Adriano with his great stature and left foot…I really liked him.”

It is said that strikers really test themselves in Serie A against the best defences and Lukaku is already in practice during training sessions.

“Each of them has important characteristics: Milan Skriniar marks you tightly, Stefan de Vrij’s positioning is excellent. Diego Godin reads the play excellently. Andrea Ranocchia and Danilo D’Ambrosio are tough guys, as is Alessandro Bastoni: he might be young, but he’s made an impression on me and builds the play well with his left foot.

“They are all fantastic and it’s very useful to come up against them in training. I want to play against the best, because this is how you can prepare for matches.”

Antonio Conte had put Lukaku as the top name on his wish-list when taking the Inter job this summer.

“Obviously, he missed out on me when he was at Juve and at Chelsea but right now, it was the right timing and the right circumstances for me,” Lukaku told BBC Sport.

“I wanted to discover something else, a new challenge and play for a club that is hungry and ambitious to do the right things, with the right manager we have right now.

“I think we have to work hard day in, day out to achieve what we want to do in the end. We are making the right steps to improve.

“Outside that he is a nice man, somebody who is really motivating you, even when you are doing such hard work on the pitch. It is quite good and everybody is working really hard.”

Alexis Sanchez joined Lukaku at Inter and the pair became good friends at Manchester United.

“It is a good move for Sanchez. He played in this league before. The people here know him. In the Premier League he did really well when he was at Arsenal.

“He has had a difficult time at Manchester United. Coming here was the right move, in a good dressing room, where the manager wants winners who can really help the team. He is going to be part of that.

“He is going to add a lot of competition to the squad we already have. Now it is up to him to show it. I really believe he is going to do well for us. We are here to help him out. Hopefully, he can add that little spark to our team.”

Lukaku to his credit seems pretty humble from what i saw in interviews and the podcast he did.

We again fail to win. 3 games in a row now. Selling Lukaku may be one of Ole's biggest mistakes, especially because he was not replaced.

You're having a year zero. Banter era incoming for you guys. Fergie time is over and will probably take a good ten years to come back again in some form.

All my friends are MU fans and god, do I hate that fucking team. Overhyped as fuck. Tho Scholes <3...

I don't see how we are overhyped when everyone knows we are bad? Clearly this season does not look good for us at all for several reasons.

Just marketing value of your players is too high. Even now, you have squad that is combined 100m higher than Inter (source transfermarket). But you don't perform that well.

Always great to see strikers score on their debut. Like some of us said before we bought him, his first touch is pretty bad. I hope it won’t lead to him to fucking up our counter attacks in the future but we’ll see.

You make it sound like we scored on the counter before he arrived

You understand why players like Pogba and Martial have a lot of value, right?

Those guys aren't the ones making the difference.

Candreva is 5m, Ranocchia is 3m, Biraghi is 10m, Valero is 2.5m. Add these all up and you have Phil Jones and 500k change.

And I wouldn't even trade Valero for Phil Jones. And we currently want only 3m for Valero who we could very well just terminate the contract like we did with Miranda (also on a 3m loss).

Lingard is valued at 40m there. Skriniar and De Vrij are valued 60m and 50m respectively. If Lingard was at Inter, his value would be 10m and if the other two were at Man Utd they'd be 100m and 75m respectively.

That's the main difference.

English homegrown players always have higher transfer fees. The money of the Premier League causes that so their value is always inflated. It's not just a United thing. Alex Iwobi is a homegrown player and he went for £34m. That is absurd but that's the English market.

United have so much shite in that squad though it's ridiculous. They're cutting some dead wood now but for years they've had players stealing a wage. One of the highest wage bills in Europe on a Europa side. Embarrassing.

I actually feel bad for Ole, he's nothing but a puppet for their owners. They'll do well to finish top 7.

A big lump most of the match, but maximum respect for acting with the highest amount of coolness during the penalty, and with outmost class after it.

That miss was atrocious, but 2 for 2 is still a good start.

That miss from the front corner was a bit behind him on his weak foot. Unless there was another that I missed.

Side note: we play Cagliari in Sardinia second match. Odds of Lukaku getting racially jeered are probably high, given the idiots in Sardinia

Called it

No I fully agree, soon as it went wide I wasn’t surprised as like you said the ball was behind him so had to stretch and lean back a bit.

As the commentators never stopped mentioning, he’s not had a full pre-season, isn’t fully match fit so I think we can expect more improvement from him as we go on.

What he was though was a bully, chasing defenders and winning headers using his strength which I think he’ll get better at once the team is more gelled and he is fitter/ shaken off the rust.

Miss was bad although not as bad as everyone makes it out, as I think it was a little behind him. Great pass for Sensi on the penalty, and great mental strength to score it after the abuse.

It's not just the shot that's criticized, the whole movement was way off.

There was no way the ball could reach Lukaku where he was running to, the path was blocked. The ball only reached Lukaku because it went in between the legs of the defender. The run was quite bad and showed lack of spatial awareness since the only way he could have received the ball where he was showing (can he stop doing this ffs?) was if his teammate dribbled past the other defender out wide and slotted an outwards pass to Lukaku. There also was no defender onto him so he could have ensure his run was better timed. He was completely unmarked. His defender abandoned him to go for the ball and Politano.

The execution was also quite bad because he opted for a first time shoot off balance when his body was facing the exterior of the goal. He had time to control it and finish it on the second time but he always prefers to shoot (or pass) first time no matter what. He's no 'killer' unfortunately otherwise that would have been 1-3.

You can also notice this with the last Politano chance. He's running in the correct lane per se, but he's completely ignoring that a defender was on his left and closer to the ball if a pass would take place, meaning that he wouldn't receive it for a tap in... Unless the pass was made in a very specific place, at a very specific time, assuming that neither ball marker and GK could reach it. Politano could have done better of course, but given how the situation was taking place, Lukaku's run was also off.

He will prove he is better than Icardi. He is only getting started.
