So cafe and blue. You're ok that he is just another average keeper who actually can't bail us out , not even once, and doesn't pull off heroics? Are we Cagliari?

He has the second worst conversion of saves from shots on goal after 6 games , only behind Benevento. Thanks to our5 goals against them.. Sure he isn't the issue. But you don't win a league with an average keeper. You need a heroic keeper to win the league. at 36, that, he is not. Decide where you want to be, if its second, or third best, then yeah he's ok

Three goals vs Fiorentina.

1) A defensive hiccup, goal came from well within the minor box with two players actually passing the ball there.
2) Second goal was yet another defensive lapse, ball was wide and Handanovic was protecting his near post, Fiorentina player comes in and is free in the box and takes a great shot that no GK would have reached.
3) A great counter attack by Fiorentina where Chiesa was absolutely free and this was the only one where Handanovic could have stopped if he was lucky. He got a hand to it but not lucky enough to parry it away. But if he tried to situate himself better for a first time shot, Chiesa would have rounded him as that was the obvious move there. The gk usually has no chance here.

4) Handanovic failed to clear the ball well here, the defense's positioning was horrendous though. Good shot in the corner but awful to give up possession there.
5) Yet another counter attack and we somehow let a free man in the box when it's been a 3 on 3 situation. Nothing to blame Handanovic for here.

6) Bastoni caught napping there, Perisic cannot beat SMS to the ball in the far post and it's a great header really. Handanovic couldn't really react given the height of the ball and only a lucky stop would have worked. Also got a hand to it.

7) PK goal. Almost reached it.
8) Free chance for the attack with a player having loads of space and entering the box. Looks bad on Handanovic that he conceded it under his legs, but come on.

9) Saved the PK and the ball rebounded back to Zlatan for the easy goal, yet he was very close for a double save.
10) Awful defensive mechanism, Kolarov lets Zlatan get an easy far post first time shot. No chance for a gk there.

11) Yet another defensive collapse and a great first time shot with the weaker foot that ends up at the far corner. Honestly expecting a save there?
12) A popular goal we concede. Defense breaks and attacking player is one on one in the box with lots of free space to decide what he's going to do.

I really cannot see what is expected from Handanovic. The only goal he can be blamed for was Benevento, but that's a collective build up issue not bad GKing and the game was settled already. The other three times where Handanovic had a chance, it was all part of a defensive disaster that allowed a one on one. We cannot expected our GK to stop all 1-1 attempts, there's a reason why PKs and one on one's are high level chances, the GK is at a disadvantage.

Fantastic analysis/post brehme1989.

Do you think we should replace him at end of season or do you think its the defences fault then? We concede to many goals, the shots on target to goal convertion has to be bad for us no? Keepers need to step up, world class keepers do stand up when defences fuck up. We all love Handa, we all will always love this guy but I do think it's time to replace personally.

Handanovic was the least problem today, i disagree to blame him. Our problem are bigger than Handa. The whole defense.

I blame Conte for putting Rano in front of him instead of De Vrij.

We had the same shit going with Toldo.

Our defense was shit, Toldo was pulling superhuman saves as much as he could, but our side defense was atrocious and we always conceded chances where the opposition's wingers would just play a parallel ball to the far post or backwards pass to a free trailing opposition player for an easy tap in. FIF still blamed Toldo because we conceded 2 and 3 rather than the entire defensive scheme that Mancini had going. Once we got Walter Samuel everything started to look more organized and it coincided with Julio Cesar starting most games, so people felt vindicated that the GK change was the catalyst. But Julio Cesar always let in much more sillier goals than Francesco Toldo and always had a much better defensive lineup as well as defensive mechanism in front of him. Goalkeepers that have that luxury will always look better.

People were finally praising Handanovic in the first Spalletti season because our defense was close to impeccable, given how shit it's been for years, yet the same voices that always criticized him for stupid reasons were still heard "he's a statue", "he doesn't try", "he doesn't jump" and all that nonsensical demands that violate basic laws of physics.

There's no reason to replace Handanovic yet, but who knows what opportunities we may have in the future. Cannot tell if he has 1 or 5 years into the tank left, a lot depends on our defensive quality. I mean, even Seb Frey was a good goalie, but our defense in the season he played for us was a walking disaster. He went on to look solid for both Parma and Fiorentina, not top teams but had very good seasons with him between the posts.

Honestly, this nitpicking on Handanovic is ridiculous. I'd get it if there was a reason for it, if he kept making blunders like Benevento or that infamous Torino situation, but we never lost points because of Handanovic. On the contrary, we did exceptionally far better than expected due to Handanovic pulling miracles. And that wasn't in 2013, that's just "yesterday", as in the previous season that ended like 2.5 months ago.

100% this. Handanovic is the LEAST of our problems. How many times Handa has bailed us out in the last 2-3 years? Countless times. Maybe the best one being that infamous Empoli CL-decider.

It's indeed our defensive setup which allows these ridiculous chances in almost every match. At least in matches where the opponent actually tries to attack. Shakhtar was a great defensive performance by the team, but other than that, I'm not impressed.

Handa is undoubtedly on decline. I am sure prime Handa would comfortably save Gervinho 2nd goal while sipping coffee and browsing FIF. However, Handa is still on acceptable level while there are other sectors which need to be addressed first such as left full/wing back, attacking midfielder, and forward.

Lining up his replacement is a prudent move. Certainly we cannot rely on his glorious past performance to save us in future matches. Therefore we should prepare younger and prospective GK as his backup as well as his competitor. We would not frantically search for Handa's replacement if his time is over and we would provide competition so he can keep up his current level as long as possible.

I don't think there's anything he could have done for either goal tonight.

Personally felt 2nd goal could have been avoided by Handa, as the ball went really close by him.

Age might have got to him but I expect him to perform his duties as captain (ex: talk to Lautaro to chill the f#ck down and learn how to meditate).

Fed up with his short passes. Fine Conte might have given his instructions. But you gotta make your own decision on the pitch right?

Not the first time his religious following of playing the ball out of the 6-yard box put us in difficult situations.

If the management hasn’t at least started to search for replacement, we are gonna be doomed. He is at an age we cannot predict, can easily decline fast and eventually cost us a game or a season, especially if we dont have a competent backup.

They have started it already.

What exactly did he do wrong?

Should he have reached the miserable Hakimi back pass to Benzema?
Man mark Sergio Ramos whose header hit the post and in?
Or save a rocket of a shot by an unmarked player?

He had 2 very good saves in the moments he had to intervene, cannot blame him for the goals though.

Funny that in Real Madrid forums they were praising his long and short passes and saying they were very accurate.

Julio Cesar is not on the level of Handanovic, not even close.

Julio Cesar's defense is miles ahead of what Handanovic has had at Inter, even during our first Spalletti season where we did better than expected. There's no comparison.

The Brazilian was ridiculously prone to silly mistakes and let in easy goals. he just had some acrobatic stops and obviously a few top notch performances that remained ingrained in memory as they were during our best years in recent times.
