I missed the Sampdoria game due to the hour that is was played and was not prepared to lose sleep over it. I was pissed about the result but brought myself to watch the match in its entirety yesterday and this morning.
The first thought I had is that our performance was not as bad as some posters made it out to be. I think we could have put the match to bed if one of the following had happened: (1) Skriniar testing the keeper with his uncontested header in the second half (in his defence, it was hit at pace and he did a good job to even connect with it); (2) Correa burying the chance he had shortly after coming on; and (3) Çalhanoğlu's criminal miss in the second half where he failed to get his shot on target).
I also think that tiredness from the international break and the heat in which the game was played were significant factors in the way we performed.
I looked at the goals we conceded and do not think Handavovic was at fault for either. The first took a deflection of Dzeko which left Handanovic stranded whilst the second was struck so sweetly that there was absolutely no stopping it. In many regards, it was similar to Martinez's beautiful strike. For both goals, I am not sure what Handanovic could have done better. Calling him statuesque as some of the posters on here have done was a bit harsh.
Personally, I do not think it is all doom and gloom. Obviously, we are a different team from last season but we still have a lot going for us.
