As far as I'm concerned, in this forum, we're overpricing Eto'o to begin with. The only reason we're saying things like "no less than €30 million" etc is because of the outrageous sums that were reported in the first place. When the very first reports surfaced of Anzhi making a bid for Eto'o, I'm certain that if it was reported that they offered us €20 million for him, many of us would be happy with that price. Since we've been hearing all these reports of bids ranging from mid €20 million to €40 million, we've been rather unrealistic. We bought Eto'o for €20-something million if I remember correctly, realistically, how much do we value him monetarily?
I agree that these Russians are annoying. If they have the will to do so, the financial power, and the sheer audacity to offer Eto'o some fucking ridiculous wage of €20 million per season, then they can easily fork out up to €10 million to close the gap between their offer and our asking price. Their offer to Eto'o shows they a) really want him and b) have the money to do so. So if A and B are true, they should be more likely to compromise and meet our figure.
Regarding this speculation that Eto'o may end up staying, regardless of football or other aspects of life I've never been a fan of do-overs, or going back on a decision. I wonder if Eto'o does end up staying, how much this potential transfer will have effected him, and whether his feelings, commitment and performances would be the same. To me, it sounds like Eto'o has at least mentally, already moved on. I won't complain if he stays, but the issue of his huge wages will be a bigger concern than it ever was for me if we don't end up selling him.
Good post. But I have to add to that price matter, that year ago two-year younger David Villa went to Barca for 40m€. And I saw no criticism to that price from anywhere in the football world. Eto'o is a super athlete so two-year age difference shouldn't matter that much.
IMO 30m€ is a minimum price for Eto'o, he has top years in him still (I'd say Eto'o at 33y > Villa at 33y). If the Russians value him that high (look at the annual salary), why does that not can be seen in the offer? It's ridiculous and isn't logical at all.
On that mind thing, with Eto'o not being "in it" completely if this deal falls through, I share your concern. Though I think Eto'o, if someone, is a player who can get over it and continue with little (if not none) effect in the back of his head. Like I speculated, I'm not sure would I keep Eto'o and sell Sneijder for 40m€, or keep Sneijder and sell Eto'o for 26m€.
