In what universe his tactical competence cannot be questioned. Go watch udinese game, where they had 5 on 2 counterattack. And i m choosing that moment cos we had numerous situations like that since he came. His tactical competence is zeman like in its naivety, and that's one of the most constant things about him.
Agree with everything else you wrote, but selling this man as some sort of tactically sound manager whose only problem is his man management is imo missing the whole picture. In fact, i m sure it's the other way around, his problem with motivating players stems exactly from the inability to put any sort of firm backbone into teams. By firm backbone, I mean fixing the leaking goals problem he had both with us and lazio and the fact you can set your watch for his team to have at least one major meltdown during the season.
And also speaking of tactics, it's always the same. I don't see any variations on the theme, we always play the same, in the same high rhythm which is pleasant on the eye but also what a lot of fans misinterpret as some sort of tactically sound approach, which as we saw during the whole course of the season it isn't.
I don’t see a real reason why he should radically change what we are playing. Looking at last season, an individual fuck up against Milan und the derby and more of the same in the process and against Bologna got us the title lost, it was not as if the general approach to the games was wrong from a tactical standpoint. Winning the cup and the supercoppa and additionally our surprisingly good games against Liverpool in the round of 16 proved further evidence that the general idea of how to play is there and ok.
This season you see the same type of pattern, with games in champions league being won, with the right approach in coppa and supercoppa, and with the will of dominating games at home, but what is the major difference this season is the fact that we are unable to stay concentrated away from home. For example take the games against Bologna and Spezia; it is not as if we didn’t have chances to come out as a winner, but we simply missed the killer instinct. It is clearly a motivational gap, as if the players are not fully focused on finishing off the opponent.
That’s where Inzaghis lack of man management begins in my opinion. This is where he has to start to make decisions for the team in order for the team not to overthink themselves. He has to decide who takes the penalty, who takes the dead balls (I do not like Hakan and Dimarco randomly changing), how many people stay at the back while attacking (remember Bastoni getting roasted by Conte for that one), what approach the goalkeeper takes (short balls, long balls, …) and so on.
Certainly these things have to be worked out on the pitch if your squad is of the highest level, but in our case it isn‘t so it task of the head coach to nail it.
