It isn't just this season where we should have easily finished second instead of fighting for the last spot till the end. It's also the previous one where we choked against Milan and lost a title we should have won.

In both seasons under Inzaghi we have underperformed in the league. And it's become evident this season the guy has no way to get a team out of a slump. He doesn't make any adjustments to his game in order to grind results when players are in bad form. Instead he just waits for the players to find form again. And it was the same at Lazio. It's the cups that have saved him and at a point you have to wonder if the cup progression is worth the underperforming in the league.
to be completely honest, the difference between a distant 2nd and a clear 4th isnt that big of a deal to me, but as I said earlier this season, it was unfathomable that we drop out of top 4 entirely, and yet that's exactly what happened. The underperformance is worse than even my personal mental 'worst case scenario', and thats what really worries me

Which is why I was suggesting a post-season retrospective, the board/management need to really convince themselves - irrespective of how the season ends - that this isnt a guy who is going to drop us into 5th or worse next season, because if he does the consequences for this club, and its future, will take years to fix.

If Inter will play again in CL next year, Inzaghi should stay. Obviously our big problems with him is his unwillingness to play/develop young players. And this is a fundamental problem for us going further. We could bring a few grandpas who would keep the ship afloat for a while. But giving our financial struggle, we need a "strategy" to find and develop players. We don`t have money to buy already good finished products. But this is a task for the coach and scouting department. I don`t trust neither at Inter.

in my mind at least there's a real risk that scraping into the CL and keeping inzaghi for another year just means the problem spirals even worse. I dont see any improvements in his Inter, the defense is worse than it has been for like 4 seasons, the strikers have been a disaster, midfield is maybe just about ok sometimes... team cohesion is poor,e tc

Idk why yall are discussing this, if we make it to CL, inzaghi will stay. We are just that broke and can't afford 2 manager payroll.

I get your point. But look to the other side of the coin.
Defense is worse because the personel is worse. We went from Skriniar- deVrij - Bastoni to Darmian-Acerbi- Bastoni. I don`t think would be a coach who could have kept the defense at the same level, because the personnel is much worse.
The strikers have been a desaster, because Lukaku didn`t work. I don`t think anyone believe the would bring the same output as in his Conte years, but the reality was waaay worse. He was injured more than half of the season and it took him also a long time until he seems to regain his fitness. We remain with Lautaro who every year has a dry spell, the corpse of Dzeko and Correa (no comments here). We don`t have any reliable striker for a whole campaign (Lukaku was that under Conte).
Midfield was ok, because we have 4 midfielders who were more or less constant in their output (they could even make for the absence of Brozo).

We can shit on Inzaghi how much we want and could find him many flaws (objective or not). But the sad reality is our roster is not deep enough to fight on 3 fronts until the end. Too many old senators (Darmian, Acerbi, Mikhi, Dzeko) and long injury spells (Skriniar, Brozo, Lukaku) to fight on 3 fronts. All this takes a toll. A mentally one. And you can motivate an exausted horse how much you want, but don`t expect to be fresh.
This season is similar with the Klopp`s season when he reached his first CL final with a thin squad. He barely took the 4th place and that also because Conte`s Chelsea imploded. Liverpool was as thin as Inter now.

I wouldnt say 'definitely' - we need a post-season retrospective to understand why we finished 4th (hopefully) in a season we really should have finished 2nd and been at least in the ballpark for the title if not competing to the end. Also, we need to understand what Inzaghi thinks we need to do to improve the squad to compete for the league next season, what his plans are for the squad (Eg which players leave, etc) and then decide if we think his vision is reasonable or, for example, if it involves bringing in a wghole bunch of deadwood from Lazio and suddenly they're world class players like Correa and Acerbi (cough)

The scale of our fuck up in the league is such that only a CL WIN would mean we "definitely" keep Inzaghi
Retrospective what? If he get us to top 4,final of CL and if we eventually win Coppa that would be one of the best seasons in history of this club. Ofc he needs to stay if he manages that. I consider win over beelan and going to final of CL tromendous boost for this club and chance to lure big buyers. Too good to happen. I think we can win Coppa, but it will be very hard to get top 4 cause we basically need to win every game till end, and it will be very hard to past trough beelan cause we always shit our pants against them in CL. Hope I am wrong, no one would be more happy than me.

Last I checked Bastoni de vrij and skriniars were all still here.

The defence doesn't get worse out of thin air. If your squad get worse it is likely that your performance and results get worse as well. The coach's influence usually gets so overrated by people. The best coaches in the world ask for better players each year, because if they don't get 'em the chance of success will be low, even if they are considered the best coaches in the world.

Inzaghi's playstyle is more attacking minded than our previous coaches, but that's not the one and only reason our defence has been so poor this season. I consider the drop of quality of the squad the more important reason as why this happened. Not gonna blame it all on Inzaghi, like several members of this forum constantly do.

The three original defenders under Conte are still here. The big problem we have in defense is Inzaghi doesn't have a fucking clue how to organize a defense properly.

Defending is not done by the defenders alone and those three names have been dealing with injuries and poor form this season. Inzaghi is an italian coach. Defending is heart and soul of italian football. Sure he has a clue. He just decided to pick a different approach for his style of football. Doesn't mean it's the wrong way just because you guys are used to watching shit football and your judgments are strictly result-oriented.

I dunno, I think just saying "Inzaghi is italian therefore he must know a lot about defensive football" is just a bit simplistic. Overly so, to be honest. I'm sure there are plenty of Italians who cant set up a defense.

I'm not saying I want to see shit football, but I'd like to see Inter without, until a few weeks ago, one of the worst defenses in the league? Esp with 3 arguably world class CBs to rely on, too. We should probably have the best defense in the league.

Come on Browha, take off this horse glasses. Because these 3 are still here, it doens`t mean it need to be the same output. Skriniar is injured since weeks and anyway he was on his way out (it means he won`t risk an injury and his next big contact playing his ass off). De Vrij is a shadow of himself (you can blame Inzaghi style on him but on the other hand it was at Lazio under Inzaghi when he was one of the best defenders in the league). And the replacement are not adequate, to put it mildly.

As @NimAraya said, even the best coaches want every year new players. Pep is spending hundreds of millions nearly every year even if he had a stack squad since years.

I dont think expecting him to not be a million miles worse than last year with a similar squad isnt that unreasonable. I'm not expecting him to win the league with half the squad/investment we had last year, for example, but even if we were making "acceptable" performances from defense we'd be in a much better position already.

I feel like there is a lot of mediocirty with Inzaghi that people are just accepting under the guise of "no investment", whereas despite our investment we should still be doing a lot better than we are, CL excepted.

I went for the simplistic answer because your argument was simplistic as well when you say our defence sucks because of Inzaghi! Name those plenty of italian coahces. Let's see who they are and what squad they have to play. These guys have lived through defensive football all their lives. Saying they don't have a clue about it is unreal to me.

Our worse defence this season needs to be evaluated beyond the name of our coach and 3 defenders. How a coach who has "no clue about defending" had one of the best defences in the league last season and then suddenly one of the worst this season?

Well as I said last season, for me a fairly compelling argument is that they still had the muscle.memoey of Conte ball drilled into them. It's a very mechanical system which was designed to have them basically be able to run those drills in their sleep, so it won't just leave muscle memory over one summer

That familiarity will fade even without any intervention or coaching changes over time as it isn't drilled, let alone if Inzaghi wants to try to get them to play a bit differently.

Don't have one.
Defense is worse because the personel is worse.
Darmian is a better player for us in this system than skriniar was. You don't even feel the absence of our objectively speaking best defender. That tells you all you need to know about our defensive setup. It almost doesn't matter who plays there, we always maintained a level of vulnerability that is unacceptable for a team fighting for trophies.

That's another simplistic argument. Anyone can easily remember what a mess our defence was at the start of last season. We were all in disbelief how bad it was until Inzaghi and the players came out and said they took a different approach to fix this issue. After that our defence got better and we conceded less. Nothing was carried on from Conte's ball.

Well of course all arguments are oversimplified this is a complex issue with many components. But I'd argue just saying eh worse players so it's all good, we just have to accept being defensive ass going forwards until we buy 3 marquinhos is the worst of the oversimplifications

Nothing beats that "it's the coach, so sack him" tho.

We have a coach who has vastly underperformed and so needs replacing. We also have a number of players who have underperformed and need replacing. We also have an ownership who need replacing. It's not just the coach, but to me the coach is one obvious change we should make.

Right now the transfer market is closed, our owners have no indication of wanting to sell, so I'd like to change the one thing we can control. Even when the season ends it seems unlikely we will spend on the market anyway, so academic discussions about 100-200m transfer pots don't really make any real world impact.
